Constipation after appendectomy. Any advice?

Poor DD is horribly constipated after having her appendix whipped out. She is also afraid to push because she's so sore. Dr prescribed Agiolax but it seems to just make her bloated and gassy. Any tips please MN to help her get relief?

TIA

Prunes, prunes and more prunes. Get her to have 8 a day until she is regular.
Also go to the chemist and get some suppositories, they will soften what is there now.
Is she taking painkillers ? If not, take them about 30 mins before she tries to poo.

And any painkillers with codeine in will constipate her, try to avoid it.

Is agiolax a laxative? She may be better off with a stool softener. I had a similar experience after anesthetic.

My DH has just had a small operation and the anaesthetic makes him constipated. After a couple of days, he took a daily dose of duco ease with plenty of water. This worked, it’s a softener. If she’s sore sudocream will help and vaseline smeared on before going to toilet will be more comfortable. As previous poster says painkillers make constipation worse, especially codeine.

Get some lactose, plenty of water, feet up on a low stool or suchlike when sat on the toilet.

How old is she? It can be scary, going after an op. It's likely to be big and hard- I almost fainted, and had to go back to bed to recover!

Lots of fluid, stool softener, warm bath, tummy massage if she can.

Step at the loo and relaxation/breathing!

Prune juice, lactulose syrup and plenty of water.

Thank you all very much for these useful tips! They've helped the situation.

She should’ve been prescribed a laxative after a GA. Ducosate is available without prescription.
