Thumb issue

I fell up some stairs 8 weeks ago today, nothing serious, used my hand to stop me hurting myself badly. Obviously I bumped my hands but nothing seemed too bad.

Since then I've had issues with my thumb on my left hand. It's still slightly swollen compared to my right one, I cannot bend it fully at the top joint (not sure the name of the joint) when I look at how far I can with my other one and it's tight and painful past a certain point. I also have pain if you put any pressure either side of the joint. It's worse upon waking and eases slightly during the day.

I spoke to a pharmacist a month ago who said just take ibuprofen and it will take a while and I have a drs appointment in a month (soonest I could get). I have a 2 year old so resting it wasn't really an option and obviously I have a buggy to push and her to lift up.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or thoughts, not sure if I should be resting it, moving it and trying to bend the joint more? The pain and lack of movement is just starting to grate a bit

You need to get it xrayed. Go to a minor injuries unit to get that done. It could be a scaphoid fracture and they can be troublesome

@takemetomars is that the case when it's the joint between the tip of my thumb and the next bone down (and not where the thumb joins my wrist)? My son has damaged his scaphoid on both hand before and I thought that was more wrist and I can move that part fine. I just don't want to waste anyones time

It's this joint that is the issue

Your thumb is a very important digit for grip and hand dexterity. Don't risk it, get it xrayed

I'm now under the hand therapist at my local hospital as 4 months on from the fall I still have some pain. Apparently my movement isn't too bad compared the the other thumb but there is some swelling on the thumb and palm near my thumb. I have an overnight splint and compression bandage and exercises for the day. Back for a review in a month and a decision about whether to carry on waiting or then X-ray to see if I have a healed injury
