I would go back and impress on the Doctor how much its affecting you and causing you worry, in the hope he'll organise some tests for you.
Sometimesyou have to be a bit pushy to get them to do anything.

Wisteria · 13/01/2008 18:16

..thinks makingnosense is making quite a bit of sense actually

makingnosense · 13/01/2008 18:18

Thanks Wisteria. I have the very odd moment of sanity......but it is quite rare!

BBBee · 13/01/2008 18:31

agree with makingno (who IS making sense!) I would go and state how this is impacting on your day to day life and anxiety (exaggerate)

TsarChasm · 13/01/2008 18:36

I'm 43 and my periods are becoming erratic.

Definately go back and impress upon the doctor your worries. Surely a blood test would help with one or two answers at least. Maybe you are deficient in something.

Could you ask to see a different doctor next time? A woman doctor one might have more empathy.

callmemadam · 13/01/2008 20:44

March straight back yo your GP and insist on test for thyroid deficiency - it can cause heavy periods but also delayed or stopped periods (osh name for it I can't remember). Same symptoms as my sister had for ages before diagnosed. More info available from other MNers with thyroid trouble. If he won't test you for anything ask him to put his reason for witholding bloodtests in writing to you...

whomovedmychocolate · 13/01/2008 20:53

FlirtyGerty - Why does any of that make you think you have cancer? I can understand why it might make you think you are ill, but I can't fathom why you'd think that was indicative of the Big C?

It sounds very much to me like you may be going through the menopause, or you might have a hormone/thyroid imbalance or even that you simply have post viral syndrome - have you had a bad cold recently you can't seem to shift.

In any case, you need to go to the doctor and demand a full set of bloods to rule out anything nasty. Explain that you are really worried and that you insist on having some tests. Be shirty if you have to be.

Honestly though, I don't think you are likely to drop down dead tomorrow - though the stress of not knowing what is going on won't be doing your cortisol levels much good!

lucyellensmum · 13/01/2008 21:15

flirtygerty. I sympathise as i have severe health anxiety and i only have to have a headache and ive got a brain tumour!

To me, it sounds like you are run down, or there is some hormonal problems. Whomovedmychocolate, you raised the issue of cortisol and i think you are right. Changes in cortisol can lead to all of the issues flirty mentioned, the dry hair is what makes me think of that.

One of the main things that can alter cortisone production is stress and anxiety, which is why the symptoms manifest physically as well. I think you should go back to the doctors and ask to see a different doctor if you can.

Can i ask a sensitive q? Did you ask your D if he thought you had cancer? If you did, he probably feels he has done his bit by reassuring you that what you describe doesnt sound in the slightest suspicious.

thankyou all of you for your support & reassuring messages. I have an appt with a female Gp on wednesady morning. I have to admit I have a tendancy to overdramatise things & over react - I suppose its the worst thing I could think of happening. I like to be in control and have alway had extremely regular periods so this is doing my head in a bit. will let you know how I get on & thnaks again
