Runs and severe vomiting since 10 days ago - AM I being fobbed off

Boys my DS's (8 months and 23 momth) have had the above for 10 days now, have been to the doc 2 times and seen a different one each time and keep being told they are not dehydrated and that it will go when it goes - but they seem to be getting worse - HELP!

My dd has had this for the past week but is slowly no the mend now.
She had all the sysptoms of dehydration vomiting, diarohea, dry nappies, lethargic etc so I called NHS direct last Monday and they said go to A&E. I went and they were really helpful. They gave me a syringe and some dioralyte solution. I had to give me 1ml each minute. She vomited a little bit at first but after a few hours she stopped. Much to my relief.

If you have not tried it yet I would get some of this from the chemist. DD has been drinking this for the past week through a syringe so I could control how much she gets at a time and its really helped.
She is now munching away on dry toast and I am slowly introducing fish and chicken. HV said to saty well away from fruit, veggies and milk as it can aggrivate the gut.

It's good that they're not dehydrated but how upsetting for you all that it's going on so long. It could be rota virus.

DS2 is not weaned so I can't avoid milk with him

They just seem to perk up and then I have a night like last night where I got puked on about 5 times and changed the beds about the same amount!

Have been to A & E on friday (after speaking to NHS direct) and they said about dyoralite but the boys will not take it! They said to take back to the docs on monday if still not better and the doc would get a sample, but he didn't think it nec.

Try the blackcurrant flavour diarolyte and put ice cubes in with it.

DD had the runs recently for over 3 weeks and the doctors advice was wait and see. I diluted the dioralyte and tried all the flavours..DD only liked the blackcurrant one, hated the citrus.

I think you are being fobbed off. I would be really worried in children so young. The older one should be on a very strict diet of only dried toast, mashed potato and the like. That might help him. But the younger one seems so young to have been ill for so long. I would speak to the doctor again and say how concerned you are. Make a nuisance of yourself if that is what it takes to get some action. But then, what action do you want them to take?

These bugs can be awful and go on for AGES. If it is a nasty bug then the only thing one can do is make sure they're not dehydrated as no medicine will help to shift a viral infection. Dp, dd and I had rota virus early last November and really truly none of us felt better until after Christmas. And dp has a cast iron stomach. We just were off food for ages afterwards.

One little question - how do you mums manage to not get these viruses from your kids? It amazes me that they're sick all over you and you don't catch it?

I don't think you are being fobbed off. Unfortunately there is little that the doctor can do for most cases of D&V and it just has to run its course. (Would be wonderful if there was magic pill wouldn?t it!). The most important thing is to make sure they remain well hydrated during this time. Use the dioralyte if you can but don?t panic too much about this, as long as they will take water/weak squash. Hopefully it will start to clear soon. If it continues to the end of the week though I would see GP again and ask for stool sample to be sent, just to rule out any rarer bacterial causes. Also if at anytime they are not taking fluids you must seek advice sooner rather than risk them becoming dehydrated.

prefernot, I try and make sure I drink a probiotic drink like proviva or yakult.

My hv also said to use something like the dettol spray around the hous

my dd (4months) had this exact same thing for 2 weeks... took her to the doctors 3 times in 4 days, was prescribed blackcurrent diralite, and she took it no problem but things just didnt get better. Was realyl concerned, but as long as they are not dehydrated ( check moist mouth, wet nappies and soft spot ) you have to sit it out. It does get better, as I said it took 2 weeks but she has been fine since the weekend - touch wood!

we did this for a month, I nearly went for the stupid effing doctor yesterday.
Helpful NHS direct said try cutting out all milk/dairy for 48 hrs to see if it improved as lactose intolerance can follow gastro enteritis...
also we used acidopholus powder
one of it worked, she wasn;t sick last night!
Hope they get better soon.

I don't know how I've not got it, but I must say my tummy is feeling v dodgy today and I keep being hot and cold..... bummer!

DS2 is very happy in himselfbut ds1 is not listless and has had about 3oz of water today, but, touch wood he's not been sick since around 4am. We are all extremley lethargic. I'm going to take us out for a walk as I think staying in can make you feel worse. Hopefully ds1 will be happy if he can mince his little pushchair round the park

Spikeycat, my baby (9 months old) had something similar a few weeks ago. I was also advised by GP and pharmicist that they can develop a temporary lactose intolerance when they have a tummy bug so I switched him to SMA LF (Lactose Free) for a few days - or you could try a soya formula if you prefer

There are tons of tummy bugs around - some last a couple of days - others weeks - up to 1 year old should take Biocare Bifidobacterium Infantis in water or 1/4 strength formula - older kids Banana or Strawberry Acidophilus plus by Biocare - halves the time and severity of tummy bugs. Heels Vomitusheel (find a practioner who sells this from www.biopathica.com) is excellent for sick bugs. Good luck!
