Worst back pain ever.. help!

I have a lot of back pain..so I'm used to a general level of discomfort with flare up. I went for an MRI last month to see if it's Ankylosing Spondylitis (my Dad had it) as I'm super stiff in the mornings but it eases with movement then creeps back as the day wears on. (Still waiting for results)
But on Wednesday I tried to get out of bed and bloody hell the pain...lower back and sacroiliac joints. From no where, I couldn't bend at all, had to lift my legs singly to get in the car and , well I don't know what to do with myself.. I'm shuffling like I'm 100, if I sit for any length of time the pain worsens and nothing is touching it.
I've taken paracetamol and naproxen (luckily had some in the cupboard) and some extra gabapentin that I'm on. Nada.. at best it dulls it fractionally.

GP appointments are like rocking horse poo... very rare.

Is there anything self help wise that anyone can suggest (especially if they have AS which it is, probably) to keep myself functioning. I started a new job last month so simply cannot be off sick!!!!

Go and see an osteopath. GPs are useless at dealing with back pain. They will only tell you to take painkillers.

If the pain is that severe you need to ring 111 and be checked over to make sure there’s nothing more serious going on and to get stronger pain relief.

I'm aware of the signs of Cauda Equina (my DD1 is a doctor... and gave me a list of stuff to watch out for) and so far no numbness thankfully so I am hoping it's nothing serious. I'll try and see an Osteopath asap if I can get an appointment with one, but Monday I have my baby grandson all day and DD2 has no other childcare so I just need to manage til I can see someone. I can't take codeine unfortunately (makes me vomit)

Have you tried a TENS machine?

Autienotnaughtie · 06/05/2022 20:42

Physio? I'm suffering with lower back spasms and shooting pains/numbness in legs. Gp could not care less just sit me on a waiting list for physio so I pay privatefor physio. Never had any investigation done though.

@StillMedusa i have AS. When do you get the results of your scan?

KittenKong · 07/05/2022 18:02

I'd second an osteopath. I've a dodgy spine and have been popping disks like firecrackers for years now, and get a lot of muscle pain (from next to backside).

I have tried allsorts - the only thing that works is the osteo and some pain relief gel (on prescription). Pills do nothing.

You have to try to keep moving though. Slowly - get a stick if you need to (I have my grandfathers old walking stick!).

I’m having this. Started about 10 days ago and getting no better. The pain in worse when I get out of bed but still there all day. I have mild scoliosis so don’t know if it’s anything to do with that but it’s starting to affect my mental health. I’m going to try and see GP on Monday and see what they advise.

When you’ve really buggered up your back it takes weeks to feel ‘normal’ again! I’ve never found doctors very effective (just gave me knock out pills for elephants which just made me feel groggy and I could still feel the pain).
