Lysine for coldsores

Hi all!

I have been taking Lysine tablets (1000) one a day for about two months and if I get a red patch or an electric shock feeling in my lip, I take a second one and it disappears and my lip returns to normal. I have also started using liquorice q balm for the last two weeks as well (love the stuff as lips are so smooth) but not sure if that is helping.

I was just concerned about any long term effects like kidney problems etc. the supplement might have. I know they say it is safe for a year and then you must have a break but not sure what the break would do?

i was thinking of stopping them completely and then just taking two when I have a sign (but don’t always have a sign as sometimes they are just there!) but am anxious to stop taking them as cold sores are awful, but then so would any long term effects!

Any one been taking these for years and had no problems?

Thank you!!!!

Um... not saying anyone else should do this... but I used to take about 4000mg in one go at the first sign of trouble. And it would go away.
No ill effects. I don't drink alcohol... I figure I can take liberties here. Like I said, my rationale may not be wise. Anything not to get a cold sore.

I’ve had one cycle of them to sort a one coldsore and then stopped.

more effective was giving up gluten completely and getting treatment for low b12. I went from six coldsores every year to only one coldsore in 5 years.

Popcorn100 · 05/05/2022 22:00

So you didn’t take one a day, just when you felt one coming?

I take a multi vitamin plus which would cover the b12 but didn’t think about gluten - is there a link with coldsores??

Me!

I took it for years. I did a lot of research and never came across the information about taking a break. It worked brilliantly.

I stopped when we started TTC my first, then had back to back BF/pregnancy/BF and didn't want to risk it so stopped completely. Somehow something changed as I went from getting around 6-7 cold sores a year to 1, if that, and if I take a triple dose as soon as I feel the tingling it never actually appears.

I re-read my message and it doesn't make a lot of sense. 6-7 cold sores pre Lysine, barely any on Lysine and perhaps 1 a year now, years after stopping regular use.

Popcorn100 · 05/05/2022 23:08

Wow that is awesome. Have only read good reviews about Lysine. They say it can cause gallstones/kidney problems?? Reassuring that you took it for years without any problems. Was it 1000 a day?

Yes it was.

Thank you!

B12 is a strange deficiency, injections are required if very low as tablet b12 is only effective with mild deficiencies

Worth getting the b12 spray for under your tongue ('better you' do one). I used to get around 5-6 recurrences a year and I've only had one in about 9 months (and I think triggered by the covid vaccine!).

My father has been taking it since the 80's. A couple a week and an extra if he feels anything. He's 80 now and in amazing health, and he hasn't had a cold sore in decades.

efeslight · 08/05/2022 15:55

I only take lysine when I can feel a coldsore starting, and i take 4 -6 1000mg tablets a day. Then i stop after a few days. Didn't know that lysine had implications for kidney damage
