Suddenly getting dandruff - mid 30s

Has anyone suddenly started to get dandruff? I'm 35, haven't changed shampoo recently. Can't explain it!

Dandruff (which is just a name for flaky skin from scalp) can actually be caused by a number of different conditions: allergies or sensitive skin, dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. I guess any of them can come on suddenly, but in order to treat effectively you need to know which one.

I started getting it suddenly as a teenager and mine is caused by mild psoriasis.

You could try an anti dandruff shampoo and see if that helps, if not then see your GP as if its something like psoriasis you may need something stronger.

Yes! I'm 41 and have recently started with a dry, itchy, flaky scalp. It's making me self conscious to be honest.

Anotherpassengerwantstogetoff · 15/04/2022 18:52

Mine suddenly started in 2020, shortly before lockdown.

I now have to rotate various expensive shampoo or else it flares up again.

T gel worked for a while but now does nothing.
I spent the best part of 18 months using nizorel-which is prescription strength-twice a week, with other dandruff shampoo on the other days, but now nizorel doesn’t work.

I’ve tried everything. It’s driving me nuts.

Body shop ginger shampoo is great- I use it for alternate washes. Never had anything work so well!

DoubleChinWoes2 · 15/04/2022 19:00

I'm also really self conscious of it too @Kirstos1. Its unfair to suddenly have something else to be insecure about at our age, isn't it!

How do I work out what it could be? I can't think of anything that has changed recently. I'll get the T Gel and then go from there maybe

Yes!! I have exactly the same!! The only thing working for me is using t-gel shampoo and then Head & Shoulders conditioner. I would love to be able to go back to normal hair products as it helps my scalp but isn't the best for my actual hair Sad

No idea what caused mine either, it just come out of the blue.

Onebrokentoe · 15/04/2022 19:02

Mine was caused by overactive thyroid. When I got that under control it went away. I had other symptoms too though.

bagelsandcheese · 15/04/2022 19:06

Yes it's bizarre, never had it before and suddenly started with a. Horrendous itch scalp. I've used t gel for the past two days and it is loads better allready.

Seaoftroubles · 15/04/2022 20:02

@Anotherpassengerwantstogetoff l have used Nizoral (prescription strength) on and off for many years but have had a few occasions when l've needed something stronger as it wasn't enough to stop the itching. l was prescribed Locoid scalp lotion, a hydrocortisone preparation which worked really well for me to get my scalp under control.

Yes it's very unfair! Although I am aware it's a first world problem!

I'm going to try tgel too, I've got some head and shoulders but I think its making it worse. Smells good though! Damn you Claudia winkerman and your super persuasive shiny hair!

Kirstos1 · 15/04/2022 22:14

Winkleman. Thank you autocorrect!

nicesausages · 16/04/2022 07:02

Yep, I have this problem.
My Dad too so I've definitely inherited it from him
Head and Shoulders is the only thing that works for both of us and the dandruff come back if I stop using it
