Low Ferritin - can I just take 2 iron tablets a day...

Been having horrific periods. Waiting for an appt with Gynae for an ablation.

In the meantime my blood test has come back with a Serum ferritin level of 16.3 ug/L [range 10.0 - 291.0]

So in the low range - but within range. Last time I was like this the GP just said to take a bog standard 14mg dose daily....but it took an age to make a difference......if it made any at all......

Can I just take 2 a day for a bit? Are there any dangers. Am not sure I can face battling my GP with the questions.....

Or is there an alternative.

You can get a higher dose on prescription, it will be more like 200mg. So I don’t see that 2x14mg would be bad for you. But I would ask for a prescription - the only thing is it can be hard on your stomach - either causing constipation or the opposite.

Have you tried tranexamic acid for the heavy periods?
If you can afford the ridiculously high cost you could go for an iron infusion at a private clinic.

Hi, I got similar ferritin of 12-15, taking 3 x 200 mg of ferrous sulfateat the moment

What's your HB? I get an iron infusion when my ferritin drops to 20.

I take 2 x 210mg ferrous fumarate every day. I am prescribed them but I buy them online as they are cheaper and you do not need a prescription to buy them. Link

Thank you everyone. I pinged a follow up e-consult over and got a text this afternoon saying that a prescription for 200 tablets on its way. I get free prescriptions (thyroid) so I will use this this time but look at the link if I need any more, so thank you. Am hoping I get a bit of verve back to be honest. Am on HRT and feel seriously better than I did, but do tire easier than I used to. Am on transexamic acid but bleeding 9/17 days so it isn't perfect
