Tonsillitis resistant to antibiotics

On first week of Feb I woke up one morning with really sore throat. I've never had anything like that before. I've tried treating it at home but after 10 days I contacted GP, I was prescribed steroids, but that didn't do anything and by that time I had white spots on tonsils and fever so was prescribed 5 days of penicillin. It cleared the white spots but throat remained red still. After 3 days of finishing antibiotics, tonsillitis came back again so again I was prescribed 10 days of penicillin. After 10 days dose, I still had red throat so blood test and throat swab was done. Both came back normal, throat swab was sent to a lab and after 2 weeks I got a text that there's some light growth of bacteria and the lab shows that it's sensitive to penicillin so penicillin again it is. 7 days round again and as soon as I was finished white spots started appearing again.
I went to GP again and she prescribed Co amoxiclav. She also found a swollen lymph node in my neck so she said these antibiotics should sort it out. This brings it to today. I just took the last pill and my tonsils seem normal, lymph node is gone, but I STILL have red, sore throat.
Had anyone maybe had something similar? I'm truly desperate tbh. It's been almost 2,5 months of this and after 4 rounds of antibiotics I'm just just so tired. We have a holiday booked for this Sunday but I'm not sure how wise it is going knowing I most likely will have tonsillitis there again.

I don't have experience of recurring tonsillitis.

How's your diet? Make sure you are eating with nutrition in mind - so add in plenty of vegetables and fruit and eat a balanced diet with leafy greens. It probably won't help get rid of the tonsillitis but hopefully it will help your body through it. Plenty of fluids too.

I like bone broth too. If you can find some bone broth or make some yourself, that can be very soothing. I like to drink it straight.

I hope you will get better soon and I hope your doctor can help you. Maybe with new antibiotics or a hospital antibiotic. I don't know what the treatment is.

I’ve been in the same boat since Feb, just managed to get it under control. I used corsodyl twice a day (am/pm) then made a mouthwash from hydrogen peroxide and did that 3 times a day. Also started to take selenium, vitD and zinc. And drinking lots of water, and so much rest. Also I’d soak my toothbrush in a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution inbetween uses, and it seemed to have resolved redness and inflammation that I’ve had since my last bout.

I had my first bout of tonsillitis in Feb, and got post streptococcal arthritis from it so you have my complete sympathy.

Thank you both!
My diet is ok I think. Lots of soups and soft foods lately. The only changes that I can think since this started is that I stopped breastfeeding after 2,5 years so I might be lacking some vitamins.
I'm doing gargles with salt 3 times a day and have changed my toothbrush at least 4 times since all this started but I will get the hydrogen peroxide today to keep it clean.

I had 4 bouts of tonsillitis in quick succession and ended up having to see an emergency doctor the pain was so bad at the end of the 4th lot of antibiotics. Apparently my tonsils were so damaged/porous that they were infecting themselves. Ended up needing to have them removed. Was worried as it's not really recommended in adults, but it was the best decision ever!

@JustSmallFry That sounds awful! But glad to hear you got it sorted after having the tonsils removed. I'm also starting to think it might be the only option left. I'm worried about recovery time but then again I've already missed work because of this so might as well get this sorted.

I suffered years of constant bouts of tonsillitis, and was forever back and forth to the GP. It was only when my employer got fed up with me being off that they docked my pay, I went back to the GP and asked for a referral to Ear Nose and Throat at the local hospital.

When I saw the consultant, (and I still remember his exact words even though this was in the early 1980's) he said "Good God, those have got to come out".

So maybe ask for a referral if it keeps happening.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I had a 10 day course of penicillin and it came back, I had a further ten days and it came back so they gave me a 20 day course 🤢🤢 and then that cleared it up.

Good luck

I also used Peroxyl mouthwash, swill it at the back of your throat, it'll help kill off the bacteria

Thanks everyone! Woke up this morning and I can feel it coming back again. Spoke to a GP and a referral to the ENT it is. Just hope I can avoid taking crazy amounts of antibiotics by the time I'm seen
