Diverticulitis

My db has this and recently fell ill again with it. He’s been so bad that nothing is clearing it up. The GP sent him to the surgical assessment unit today and he was made an inpatient. He’s gone home as he’s the carer for dm, but will go back tomorrow for a CT scan.
He’s having a bit of a panic, but if he needs surgery, so be it.
Does anyone know what is involved in the surgery? Has anyone else had surgery or got diverticulitis?
I’d love to hear your experiences.

I've got it and it flares up occasionally. Really nasty when it does. Nothing much helps. I hit the buscopan and a hot water bottle but generally the only thing I can realistically do is ride it out.
