UTI: Side effects from Marcobid?

TheHoleNineYards · 29/03/2022 19:46

I took one macrobid last night and another this morning. The side effects are worse than the UTI they’re treating. I feel like I’m freezing cold and I’m shivering, but I have a high temp. My muscles and joints ache. My head is pounding. I’ve spoken to my GP and he’s said to stop the meds and take a urine sample in tomorrow - thinking that my symptoms are relating to the original UTI rather than the meds, but I’m sure it’s the meds. Has anyone else had this? Any suggestions for how to get it to pass quickly?

Thank you!

I think that sounds more like your UTI has spread to your kidneys than side effects.

Littlemissprosecco · 29/03/2022 22:47

Sounds like an upper urinary tract infection now, it doesn’t sound like it’s the antibiotics

Clockstooforward · 29/03/2022 22:48

Keep taking the antibiotics…contact 111 if you are feeling really ill ..definitely GP tomorrow morning!

Sorry ignore my post !

Do you have pain in your sides or back?

I have just had to stop nitrofurantoin due to an acute pulmonary response. Trying to breathe while retching is infinitely worse than having a UTI. And yes to the pounding headache and chills.

Afterallsbeensaidanddone · 29/03/2022 23:15

Marcobid is the brand name for nitrofurantoin by the way. If the GP has advised you stop it then do as there can be serious reactions.

Trimethoprim is easier.

I took macrobid for a UTI and my arms and legs are killing me and have a bad headache.... seeing as I only found out about the uti having a general check over .... how long does this last ?

Afterfire · 05/09/2022 07:47

Macrobid made me so, so unwell. I now have it written on my notes that I can’t have it. There are lots of other antibiotics you can have - doxycycline, cefalexin, trimethoprim etc. They should give you something else.

Spudlet · 05/09/2022 07:56

Macrobid didn’t make me feel ill, but it didn’t get rid of my UTI either. Now on a week of trimethoprim to try and nuke the little bastard. Hope you feel better soon, UTIs are miserable enough without feeling even worse!

I'm just out of hospital for a kidney infection. Had the same symptoms as you. Get well soon op x

Butterdishtea · 05/09/2022 09:27

Take the antibiotic alongside Hiprex. It's like bleach for the bladder and makes trimethoprim much more effective. You can technically buy it yourself over the counter but many chemists aren't comfortable with that. A GP should prescribe it if asked as it has just been added to the NICE guidelines for treatment of UTIs. Harley Street's Malone Lee team don't use trimethoprim without it. Do check your UTI is responsive to trimethoprim if you're not seeing results as there are high levels of immunity to it.

I just can't believe how much my arms and legs ache and its such a bad headache..... I stopped the tablet how long does it take to go away x
