What on earth is wrong with my toe??! (WARNING: gammy toe pic)

Hello! NC for this. So I've just taken off the nail polish that I've had on for months to find my big toenail looking like this! (I've just hacked away at the top of the nail to try to see the discoloured bit at the nailbed but no luck...so ignore that bit)

Is it a bruise? Or something more sinister?? I don't recall dropping anything on my toe or banging it. It isn't painful.

Does this need a gp visit does anyone think? My GP is horrendous for trying to get an appointment when you're not on death's door.

Help!

You could try showing it to a pharmacist?

Dodie66 · 28/03/2022 21:53

Looks a bit like a fungal infection that my daughter had.
Leaving nail varnish on for months doesn't let the air get to the nail. Ask a pharmacist for advice you can’t get to a gp

I think it could be a fungal infection. Very common in feet. You can get treatments in chemists for them-
Not sure how effective they are.

Okay! So first stop chemist. Thank you

Looks like a combination of bruising, fungal infection and ingrown toenail.

Try a chiropodist for the ingrown nail and go to a pharmacy for the antifungal.

The bruising will take up to a year to grow out.

OP i have a very similar issue and it has now spread to the other toe. Two latest nail cultures have shown no fungal infection (and I took a very long course of anti fungals) but it very much looks like a fungal infection. GP seems to have run out of ideas and has just suggested doing a third nail culture... Am starting to thing I'll just have to live with it but my big toes look properly gross - layered deformed discoloured nails
