Blood results

Had bloods done related to irregular bleeding. They've come back with raised ALT and MCV. I know ALT is to do with liver but what about MCV and both together. Shitting myself have to have them redone in 2 weeks. Any idea what it could be?

ATL is 40, MCH is 32.1 and MCV is 101. If this makes any sense to anyone

Your MCV is practically normal, the lab at my hospital has a normal range of 80-100. I wouldn't be worried about your MCV. Raised MCV can suggest issues such as B12 or folate deficiency.

Yeah the range on the print out was that. I googled and I really shouldn't have as it brings up chronic liver disease, alcoholism or a b12 deficiency. I drink more than the recommend units a week, but wouldn't put myself in the alcoholic category. Forr the last month/6 weeks I have been eating better, dropped a few pounds, and reduced my drinking and only drink at weekends. I'm so worried and can't get a call to discuss the results with GP till the end of the week.

How did your retest go? I’m having similar results but ALT was normal…

Holidayyys · 26/04/2022 06:54

They didn't retest me for mcv and mch but checked by and folate levels which came back in normal range. Although I take a vitamin supplement which contains b12 and have since read that this can effect results of b12 cause them to appear normal when not, so wondering if I should stop taking and ask for a retest. I also noticed after looking on nhs app that my mcv and mch levels have been raised for a few years and no one has mentioned it before!

Ah ok interesting thank you. I’m having a blood test to check the b12 and folate but not until the 10th of May! I don’t think I have any previous blood test results…
