Swollen and very painful eyelid

Hello, I started with some tightness and mild soreness in my right eyelid yesterday. By evening it had worsened and the upper lid, near lash line, looked slightly pink and swollen. I tried massaging my lid and thought I could feel a small lump under my lid. The massaging seemed to cause more pain.
I woke up this morning and I could barely open my eye. It's very swollen and red and my lid has dropped. Blinking is extremely painful. It's got slightly worse as the day has gone on.
I'm pretty sure it's an infected chalazion, but after researching I'm a little concerned about cellulitis. Has anyone had similar symptoms and did they get antibiotics?
I'm seeing an ophthalmologist tomorrow, but I do have health anxiety as I already have multiple health conditions.
I usually clean my lids with a solution but it's too sore to wipe my right one. I'm not sure how a duct has become blocked and most likely infected.
I'll attach a photo from this morning and this evening (in different lighting). I do have a eye mask I can heat, but with the swelling and burning feeling, I feel like I want something cold on my lid. My appointment isn't until late afternoon tomorrow, so would I be better off waiting before using a hot compress or should I start now?
Sorry for the long message, I'm just at the end of my tether with my health.

Looks like a stye. If you gently lift the lid up you might see the head up under the lid?

Warm compress should help it to burst.

I'd phone 111 tonight. I had this once and went to the GP who took it very seriously, prescribed antibiotics and told me to go to A&E if it got any worse.

ScribblingPixie · 17/03/2022 22:18

If you're seeing someone tomorrow I'd leave it well alone. Just clean with cold water. I used to get a lot of styes and the best thing was a cold compress using camomile tea.

I’ve had a chalazion. Hot compresses might help but I had to have mine incised and drained privately as it’s no longer available on the NHS unfortunately.

I had these all the time when I was a child (lack of vit C I think). Very unpleasant.

I had something just like this a while ago. It wasn’t a stye as it didn’t come to a head. I went to the pharmacy (couldn’t get a GP appointment), they recommended very warm compress a few times a day, plus gentle massage using a lubricant such as face cream or oil. It did go away after several days, it’s been a couple of months & I can just feel the tiniest bump in my eyelid now. It’s not painful though & completely invisible. I massage my eyelids regularly now, to prevent a recurrence.

I tend to just use a warm compress...well hot actually! Several times a day and it usually disappears on its own.

There used to be Golden Eye Ointment but I think it has been discontinued.

SilverHairedCat · 17/03/2022 22:48

Stye / conjunctivitis? Especially with the lump.

Don't use a heated mask, put something cold on it for a bit. Wash your hands regularly, and try not to touch your other eye with the same hand to avoid any cross contamination.

Thank you for all your messages. It's even worse this morning, so I am hoping the ophthalmologist can reassure me as the pain is a 9. I've done a warm compress and also bathed it. My inner eyelid is fine, but from the middle to the outer corner it's dropped so much. Is it normal for a stye or chalazion to be so painful?

Good luck with the ophthalmologist.

Good luck with the ophthalmologist.
Thank you. The ophthalmologist was very helpful. Checked the back of my eyes and pupil reactions to rule out cellulitis. She thinks it's an infected chalazion that has spread to my eyelid when I massaged it. I've got doxycycline to take for a week and then have to go back to see her. She said not to massage it until it's not as painful and inflamed and to alternate with warm and cold compresses. Still not sure what caused it as I do the eyelid hygiene after a previous mild case of blepharitis a couple of years ago, but she says it could just be one of those things. Hoping it goes without needing any surgery or anything. Thank you again for all your responses.

I have the exact same thing on my lower lid. Came up our of nowhere. I was told earlier today its a stye. Warm compresses and some lubrication drops and just sit it out so will see what happens!

@Garman

Why did you massage it? What an odd thing to do to a swollen irritated eye, I'm not surprised it made it worse.
Because everything on the Internet says to massage a chalazion... Confused

Hope they help and it goes soon. I've just done a warm compress. Hoping it goes by next Saturday as it's meant to be my birthday night out (after 2 years in lockdown) but guess I'll see.

Just one of many you can find online. I don't need unhelpful comments, thank you.

I've just had similar and had it back in Jan too. I've found optase triple action spray really good. Also warm compresses and gentle massage. I am prone to blepharitis type symptoms so I'll start doing compresses and massage even when my eyes are OK as preventative, I think. Hope you're on the mend soon

CiderWithLizzie · 22/03/2022 20:27

Hope it’s improving OP?

Hey, how are you now? My eyelid has flared like yours just on Sunday (made a thread too) :(
