I am desperately trying to lose weight through diet only, but ideally should combine with exercise. The only thing that works exercise-wise for me is the gym, but just can;t do that at the moment. I wish I had a cross-trainer machine in my bedroom but unfortunately not! Please please any ideas for weight loss IN THE HOME - bearing in mind I HATE videos/dvds, partly because i am uncoordinated (whenever I've tried classes in the past, I used to be the one at the back going in the opposite direction to everyone else, like Mr Bean)

Why not?!?!?!

43Today · 05/01/2008 17:23

Dancing round the sitting room with your liveliest music turned up loud!

Also, did you know that you can do exercise in short bursts and get even more benefit than a long workout? So you could dance like a looney for 15 mins after breakfast (if you so desire!), do a brisk 15 min walk to the shops and back later in the day, and then do 10 mins of skipping and stair-climbing before you settle down to watch TV (boring as hell but a really calorie-burning workout - listen to music to help it go quicker!) That adds up to 40 mins exercise over the day..

good luck!

Bridie3 · 05/01/2008 17:26

Rebounders are good and you can watch TV at the same time.

ElenyaTuesday · 05/01/2008 17:28

Walking up and down the stairs is really good exercise!!! And free!

Biglips · 05/01/2008 17:30

Outdoor Fast walking is an excellent exercise

emiliosmum · 05/01/2008 17:48

you could get some weights to do in front of the tv and get some ankle/wrist weights to wear all day around the house making your body work harder and burn more calories.

SugarSkyHigh · 05/01/2008 18:18

some great ideas thank you !!
NAB3wishes i'd try the tramp/bike/row simulaneous combo but sadly can't stretch to purchase even one of those at the mo. lol
love the short bursts theory 43 - think will give it a go with the exception of the loony dancing - I would be embarrassed even on my own pmsl I can just see myslef
emiliosmum should I self-flagellate as well?

SugarSkyHigh · 05/01/2008 18:18

BTW what are rebounders?

OP posts:
kittywise · 05/01/2008 18:19

kettlebells, they are amazing, results in super quick time

SugarSkyHigh · 05/01/2008 18:27

and what are kettlebells?

OP posts:
emiliosmum · 05/01/2008 19:28

ssh - the ankle/wrist weight idea was inspired by a girl i used to work with who wore them evryday to tone up - it did seem to work although point taken could be hard graft!

kittywise · 05/01/2008 19:56

ssh this is an example of kettlebells

SugarSkyHigh · 05/01/2008 20:31

Emilio - sounds a sort of good idea but reminds me of nuns punishing themselves , probably says more about me than anything else lol

Kitty!!!! those look fabulous! not too expensive but v. effective it looks like. I take it you have used them? I might get some! tell me a bit more - do they require a special technique or anything?

Don't mock, but power housework - put the music on loud and really go for it. The house will sparkle and you'll really work up a sweat.

SugarSkyHigh · 05/01/2008 21:10

I won't mock - but i'm not at home most of the time due to work (shock horror i have a cleaner) plus DH works from home anyway so might not appreciate the loud music

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 05/01/2008 21:18

MP3 player - then no one else hears the music and if you get some really good power balards you will do the housework even faster!

Could you advertise for a second hand bike machine? Lots of people have them sitting doing nothing. Then you could do your own sort of spin - in the bedroom and you dont need to be coordinated do do spin. Just put on the loud music and cycle along vary the speed after a warm up.

milou2 · 05/01/2008 21:27

I use the stairs. I run up and down 4 times in a row once a day. I'm out of breath by then but pleased with myself.

When I'm ready I'll do more.

Dancing is great, the better the music the longer I'll carry on, pure heaven!

Have fun.

kittywise · 06/01/2008 08:27

SSH, yes I am using them now, well not right now !
I got a fab dvd from Canada here which does workouts of 4, 8 or 12 mins and each time you use it you don't know what order the exercises are going to come in so you can't get bored iyswim!
I started off with 2x 8 kg bells and quickly needed a 12kg, I got a 16 kg for xmas but I'm not quite ready for that yet!!

I have toned muscles from using these that I NEVER had doing any other exercise!

It also gives you a very good cv workout at the same time.

SugarSkyHigh · 06/01/2008 09:38

ivykaty- second hand bike idea is a possibility - thanks, i always imagine things being bought as new so didn't occur to me re. cheaper possibility...
milou - The Stairs are free, plus i can start straightaway. ours bend round though so will need to watch that!
Kitty -thanks for the link, it looks EXACTLY what i'm after, you're a star!! my main thing is to shift weight from my waist & hips, looks like this will do the trick if i stick to it.......

We've got a Concept II rower - you can get them on ebay for around £500 (may be a bit much at the minute?). It's a great all over work out (though I can't say I've been on it in a while!).

kittywise · 06/01/2008 10:11

SSH if you get the dvd you'll stick to it. Evveryone can spare 4 mins. I was always put off by those hour long exercise dvd's, too long and I couldn't seem to find the time, with this it's easy.
I know it seems like a lot of cost for that dvd and shipping but honestly it's well worth it!! Good luck!

ivykaty44 · 06/01/2008 16:15

Sugarskyhigh - its called re-cycling
