Levothyroxine and fluoride toothpaste

Can’t recall where I saw it if here or elsewhere but a few years ago I heard that if you have an under active thyroid and take levothyroxine then you shouldn’t brush with fluoride toothpaste as it interferes with the absorption of the levothyroxine.

So I’ve used natural toothpaste for the past eg 7 years and I’ve had awful decay since (I eat or ate sugar but not loads). Most recently I’ve got a potential root canal with decay under the gum which dentist says is rare and i have to use a high fluoride prescription toothpaste for now anyway.

So can anyone enlighten me on this link re fluoride and levothyroxine or have I been avoiding fluoride for no good reason?! Doctors and dentists always say no medical link by the way.

There's some research suggesting that fluoride can affect absorption of thyroxine, but the same researchers suggest that leaving an hour's gap between taking your levothyroxine and brushing your teeth is sufficient.

So I use a non-fluoride toothpaste first thing (which is when I take my levothyroxine), and a fluoride one and mouthwash for after that.

Also, leave at least an hour between taking your levothyroxine and taking other meds or eating/drinking anything other than water. Some meds like Omepazole it's best to wait at least 4 hours.

This is why some people prefer to take their levothyroxine last thing at night.

ah thanks for this.

I take my levothyroxine at night so will wait an hour before using the toothpaste.

I really have to use this toothpaste now at least for the time being as my teeth I think will be ruined otherwise.
