In worst pain ever (tooth) any suggestions?

I had an inlay/crown fitted today after two previous ones fell out. Previous fittings have been fine, this time the injection was really painful.

6 hours later and am in literally the worst pain ever. Have taken max painkillers, rang back dentist and they can't see me until tomorrow.

I can't last like this, what are my options? 111? It is it likely the injection/fitting has irritated the nerve and it will settle? It is in my tooth, jaw and ear

Can you get some over the counter codeine like solpadeine?

HilaryBanks · 24/02/2022 15:56

Clove oil, clove oil, clove oil. Tastes awful, but is like liquid anaesthetic and will instantly numb the area.

SalsaLove · 24/02/2022 15:56

I had something similar and it was a nerve. I couldn’t open my jaws. Try taking a bath. The warm water will ease up the tension you’re experiencing, which will help with the pain.

LefttoherownDevizes · 24/02/2022 15:57

I've taken solpadeine max and ibuprofen with codeine. Hasn't touched it. I'll try and get clove oil

Interesting @SalsaLove the nerve was exposed for the past week as the filling fell out and I can't open my mouth either. Terrified I'm going to be sick as it hurts so much but worried how as can't open mouth

Did they not remove the nerve or cover it with a sedative pack?

LefttoherownDevizes · 24/02/2022 16:05

Nope. He didn't even clean it this time, the injection didn't work so just dried it and put the inlay on

Go to the shops and buy oragel until the dentist can see you tomorrow and rise with salt water and keep your head up, an extra pillow or two at bedtime

He really should have given you an antibiotic. 🙄 The nerve irritation will die down but you need immediate relief for the pain. I’m so sorry for you. I’ve had this before and it’s excruciating. Definitely try the clove oil and orajel. Possibly call your GP for stronger pain medication?
Mrsjayy · 24/02/2022 16:28

Definitely clove oil put it on cotton wool and put it on your tooth /gum it usually works.

LefttoherownDevizes · 24/02/2022 16:34

Thank you. My gland under my jaw on that side is really sore too so I think there may be infection. I was having to pick food out off the hike after every meal (sorry if grim) and the missing tooth went below the gum line.

I have orajel as DS just got braces so will try that.

Thank you so much for the support

I had an abscess a while ago, the pain was horrendous and even after I had treatment the pain was awful. I ended up taking paracetamol with over the counter ibuprofen and codeine but more than the recommended dose and more often. I looked up the maximum dosage per day and it’s a lot more than on the box, the pain was so bad I just couldn’t cope any other way. Also rub area with sensory enough toothpaste. You have my sympathy, I hope it settles soon.

BuyDirt · 24/02/2022 16:38

Sensodyne toothpaste

BuyDirt · 24/02/2022 16:41

And I had a very swollen neck, gland was huge and couldn’t open my mouth properly. I’m still having to do exercises as my mouth is still not opening fully and have pain when yawning.

BettyOBarley · 24/02/2022 16:44

Paramol from the chemist. It's paracetamol and dihydrocodeine. It's the only thing that touched my horrific toothache.

SalsaLove · 24/02/2022 16:56

I hope you get some relief soon. Please keep us updated. 💐

Borderterrierpuppy · 24/02/2022 17:00

If you can get your hands on 5% lidocaine oral gel get some, totally numbed my mouth.

LefttoherownDevizes · 24/02/2022 17:00

Thank you all again. I've got 6 tubes of Emla cream but don't think it's for internal use!

Umm the injection didn't work? That's a classic sign of infection

LefttoherownDevizes · 27/02/2022 13:07

The crown has just fallen out Sad

I'll just have to get the tooth taken out and then work out how to sort and pay for an implant later.

Thankfully the pain settled, think it must have been the nerve. Have never known anything like it
