I am going to have it fitted soon and was wondering if anyone had one and what you think of it? Any side effects, etc etc..?

Had mirena after ds. No real problems. Got acne for a few months to begin with. Had one put in 6 weeks ago (have had dd2 since ds) and have had a period for 4 weeks! Not happy!
Anyways, I am off to bed now.

oh good post. I want to know too.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/01/2008 23:53

Mine was put in in February and fell out in November.
It had been giving me a lot of crippling pain then one day in the bath I checked it and discovered it had slipped down and the bottom of it was sticking thru my cervix into my vagina, so a gentle pull and it came out. Didn't even feel it come out.
I will have another though.
While it was in it was brilliant for my periods. They were almost non existant so I only needed a panty liner whereas before i was literally flooding and laid up for a minimum of 3 days. I would not go out during my period as it simply was not practical to do so.
Lots of peeps have had them on here and will have posted tons od replies by the time i get this up! LOL

I bled also for about 3 weeks initially, then nothing - Bonus!
Hence I will deffo be having another.

hotCheeseBurns · 02/01/2008 23:56

I've had mine for almost 2 years.

It's brilliant, the only contraceptive method I've been able to use long term. No problems whatsoever.

cheeset · 03/01/2008 00:01

I had a mirena fitted last feb and bled till I had it taken out 5 months later. I could feel it inside, the whole experience was just awful.

However, I had one for 5 years before my dd and it was fab, no real probs apart from the spikey strings. My dh could feel them at first until they softened up.

candypandy · 03/01/2008 00:02

very nice on the periods front
excellent in every way but mine gave me a hormonal cyst the size of a small orange so i had it taken out

candypandy · 03/01/2008 00:02

i mean an ovarian cyst, hormonally caused

cmotdibbler · 03/01/2008 11:10

I had one for 4 years before having it removed to TTC - no periods at all in that time and was fab. Had one put in ASAP after having DS, and I've had the odd bit of spotting, but nothing more.
Would highly recommend it.

I have had one fitted for the last 18 months after birth of my 2 dds. GP did not want me to go back on the pill because of age and weight. I didn't fancy the idea of an implant and was told that injections can cause weight gain too, so Mirena seemed the best option.

Experienced some bleeding to start with but it soon settled down and had to have strings shortened as I could feel them.

Now periods are very light verging on non-existent which is excellent. I do get a bit of period pain/cramps from time to time, but on the whole would recommend it.

HappyBiglipsYear · 03/01/2008 11:53

i had the mirena coil for 3 yrs and no periods for 2.5 yrs - THATS THE GOOD POINT

but my boobs were ssooo painful for 3 weeks..even when i was wearing clothes over them it really hurts!!....and my sex life was 3/10 as couldnt be bothered!!

Ive had my coil taken out last Oct (07) and my sex drive is back to normal and im more alert plus my boobs are only sore 2 weeks before im sue on. When im on my period my boobs are fine. Even Dp is alor happier now and so am i that our sex life is back on track as i feel horny often where before i felt dead!! iykwim??

so im not sure if i will go back on the coil as i cannot go back on the pill due to HBP...so will have a re-thinks!!

moljam · 03/01/2008 11:58

i went to get one but they had so much trouble getting it in i had to have normal one, then scans plus pill and condoms till they found it was in ok.

iwouldgoouttonight · 03/01/2008 12:18

I had one before DS and it was great - very light periods, no pain or side effects. Since DS was born I've had another put in and my sex drive has decreased dramatically. Not sure if that's because of the coil or having had a baby though.

mejon · 03/01/2008 20:01

Had mine put in at the beginning of December. Had very light spotting only for a few days but started a period on the Sunday before Christmas and it's still on. No period pains or anything else though. Doctor told me not to use tampons until after the initial 6 week check-up, but having never really used towels in the past, I just can't get used to the 'dripping' sensation when using them so I have used tampons when the bleeding has been quite heavy. Hopefully this initial mega-period (for me) will be a short-lived blip - it usually sorts itself out within 3-6 months according to the information that came with it.

I had no problem having it fitted either - the only pain I felt was when the doc pulled out the speculum at the end.

sophierosie · 03/01/2008 21:30

I've had the mirena for 2 1/2 years and its great for me! Previously had a copper coil for 4 years which gave me v heavy periods. No problems having either fitted although with mirena aparently I had a tilted uterus or something so nurse had to press down on my stomach. I took a couple of ibuprofen about an hour before as its supposed to help.

Have v light period (2 days) approx every 6 weeks which is great.

I have experienced a slight loss of sex drive, but not sure if that is a result of the coil or just hectic tiring lifestyle Doc did say that the mirena shouldn't impact on sex drive etc as hormone was local so wouldn't be absorbed into the rest of the body or something like that.
