Advice please! 11 mo has lost his voice - what can I give him?

Help! My 11 month old DS has had a cold/cough for the last week or so which has now developed into him loosing his voice. So when he starts crying (from having a sore throat or teething I guess - as he is teething manically too at the moment) his little cry is totally hoarse and scratchy. It obviously hurts him and that makes him cry more.

Calcough is for tickly coughs only and his is more chesty, but I am dosing him up with that at the moment, which is a little bit soothing. But all the other cough medicines are for 12 months + due to drowsiness.

Am I being overly cautious? Do you think a normal cough medicine will be ok?
Or is there a herbal alternative anyone can recommend?
All advice greatly appreciated.

MBPF - the buttercup syrup stuff is for 2 years plus.
Lady in Boots recommended tixylix night medicine. Hopefully it will work as I'm f*ked from having no sleep all week!
Can't get appt at Drs till Monday so I am hoping its not proper croup. x
