Abscess drainage/removal this afternoon

Anyone else had this and can advise what recovery was like?

It’s in my armpit and I was originally told it was a simple local anaesthetic job but have been advised to have a GA so they can make a bigger incision and flush it all out.

Sitting here in the hospital in a surgical gown, they are coming for me “very shortly” (have said that all morning) and I’m panicking slightly

I’ve had several abscesses in a Frankly Much Worse Place. You really will be fine. I love anaesthetic! Enjoy the whizzing off to sleep and then the waking up blissfully hungry (hope the sandwiches are good) and packed with lovely painkillers. I expect, and hope for you, that the incision will heal much quicker than it does in a Frankly Much Worse Place..

Oh bless you thanks for replying. Yes armpit is not as bad an area as it could be but up to this point any kind of physical activity has hurt- I hope that post op there will be some improvement at least

It might be sore when the painkillers wear off, but nothing like the absolute agony you’ve probably been in.

Check out Sporner Corner on here. Lots of armpit abscess threads in there.

Hope it goes well and you feel much better after the drainage.

Thanks both I finally got home at 10.30pm

The waiting around was def the worst thing by a country mile. GA was fine, pleasant in many ways. And now my armpit is less sore than it was when I went in. Result. Incredibly grateful for the nhs.
