Tonsil stones..

Have a very sore one sided sore throat that has been coming and going since yesterday morning, ear on same side hurts when I swallow at times not all the time, last night I saw two white lumps? on the sore side and after googling realise they are tonsil stones.
Never had them before to my knowledge so the first time to get them at 53! I've been rinsing with warm salt water and mouthwash to try to dislodge them .. read this on google link but no budging yet.
I've seen videos of people popping them but I'm not brave enough for that!!
Can I leave them alone? Will they go away on their own? I really can't be popping them, are they something you bother the doctor about?
My kids have never had them so I've no experience of tonsil stones any advice appreciated

They will eventually come out - sometimes I have one work itself free if I sneeze.

The easiest thing to do is just pop them out - in my experience you need very little pressure and it doesn't hurt at all, it's actually very satisfying!

Google removal. It is easy.

They will eventually work themselves out. I get them and they aren't particularly pleasant!

The throat swabs you get with LFT tests are ideal for this. Just press the area behind the stone and they should pop out.

Warning tho and TMI - they stink!!

Are you certain that's what they are? Shouldn't give you a sore throat

stevalnamechanger · 07/02/2022 20:24

I clean the end of my toothbrush and use that to prod it out

LightSpeeds · 07/02/2022 20:24

Are you sure it's not tonsilitis (and the white spots you get on your tonsils)?

coldfeetmama · 07/02/2022 20:32

I agree , they don't give pain at al
Can be dislodged with a cotton bud or a cough / sneeze
Sorry tmi but when I had them they didn't smell until I squashed them in between my fingers then oh my god , it was like poo
🤭

I would remove them as they make your breath very bad.

user94747295 · 07/02/2022 20:37

I spray the back on my throat with a water flosser everyday and it stops them from forming.

3luckystars · 07/02/2022 20:40

They are not usually painful. Are you sure you haven’t tonsillitis?

Hi all thanks for replies, yes definitely tonsil stones , sore throat one sided comes and goes but generally ok and not sore now.
I felt like something was caught in my throat last night felt like a lump, I had a look and there is only one big white stone/ lump there now so one has come away.
Hoping the other one comes away now I'm rinsing my mouth with salt water and mouthwash.
