High Blood Pressure

Hi

Sorry for the long post ..

My mum went to get her blood pressure checked as they sent her a text.

Reluctantly I booked it for her because she would always say "she's busy" but if it was anyone one else she'd tell them to go!!

She is 54, slightly overweight but has been for many years, very active job, never sits down!!! Always doing something, how mums are.

Anyway she went and they were shocked it was at 190/110 ????? They done it 3 times and said that is stroke level????

She has been having issues with her knees / legs for years. osteo arthritis and varicose veins etc and she's having a flare up and one knee and behind it in the crease is quite painful at the minute, she does have an appointment for that Wednesday.

Anyway ..

The doctor said it may be because of that but buy a meter and keep an eye on it for 7 days.. I'm quite concerned.

Has anyone had this? Are you ok? Sorry this sounds stupid but I'm scared, I don't want anything to happen to her.

That is very high, but try not to panic too much. Mine has occasionally gone that high, but naturally came down a bit on its own.

There are lots of things that can play into it. Being at the GP is usually enough to raise it higher than normal. It will also go up after meals, later in the day and when cold, dehydrated, or in pain.

So if you add fluids, help her stay warm and relaxed, that might bring it down a bi.

But with readings that high, it may be that she needs medication to help.

I was just at HP today and mine was 153/120.....but I was incrediably anxious and the GP knew this and said it was fine...she checked it again and it was still high at 140/112. But...she also took it with my arm down, which I know makes it higher. She said it was fine bc of my anxiety and we had already done the 24 hour monitoring, which overall was fine. And I monitor at home and it is always usually in the 109/69-120/80 range. I have had the odd spike like once a month, but have been told that can happy w anxiety etc. I keep an eye on it, although the doctors have told me to stop checking it daily...but with health anxiety...I cant but help it. Anyway, your mom should check it daily at home to see if it is fine at home. I have two machines at home that I use. I try to limit my check to once a day. At one point I was doing 3 times a day. I eat a healthy diet, exercise and I am slim....changed diet and started to exercise to help keep my BP at a good level. But need to learn to control my anxiety.

But you still need to get your mom to check her BP at home like twice a day for now to see what her numbers are. If mine were the same at home, then I would be very concerned. But at home my BP is at good levels and I have checked daily and used two different machines for months and months. She needs to change her diet and exercise. Check out forks over knives. That is the fastest way to reduce BP.
