sorry I don't know nuffink, but thought I would bump this up for you

muminlondon · 22/11/2004 14:08

I think you would be able to find things on the internet - here's a US site for example: CDC info - sounds about as common as the cold sore virus.

Don't know much about it, except that it can harm an unborn baby if you get it when you're pregnant. Know someone who had a termination because of this.

Haven't posted on MN for ages, but have just dropped in and saw this. It's a topic v. close to my heart because CMV absolutely wiped me out for the best part of 3 months earlier this year. Could bore you with loads of stuff about it - scientific and dippy hippy. Why do you want to know?!

charlie95 · 02/12/2004 22:58

sorry for delay - busy.
ds had it when ill in hosptial 3.5 yrs ago and no one seems to know anything about it to explain it to us. just that i would have had cold like symptoms and probably passed it on to him that way. asked consultants recently cos pg again and wondered how bad it was/is wiht unborn baby. apparently some blood tests showed low levels of cmv which would indicate i have had at some stage, and they are checking the levels do not rise - presumably would indicate that actual infection reoccuring. so to round off just generally wondered if anyone else had come across it and looking for reassurance. got enough other troubles on my plate at moment.

charlie - dh is an expert on CMV as is a research scientist who has done work in this area - I will try to remember to ask him tonight when he gets home and post some info for you

bonym · 05/12/2004 20:31

Hi charlie95 - sorry to be so long getting back to you. Dh says that it sounds like you just have CMV anitbodies, having had the infection at some stage. If you are actively sick with it during pg/delivery then you should be receiving anti-cmv medicines as it may be passed to the baby. However, if you are not currently suffering then should be no or low risk. hth.

Again, sorry for not keeping up more quickly with this, but bonym, I'd be dead interested to know more about it - wish I could be in a room with your husband for an hourGrin! My life still being overshadowed by CMV, and my GP is not at all helpful - partly because she doesn't know anything about it. Basically what I'd like to know is, can it come back and do even more damage once you've had it? I was ill with it for about 3 weeks this Easter, but am still getting over it (tired, ME type symptoms, pins and needles, visual problems etc). Can cope with all this because these symptoms are not too debilitating, but am terrified it'll come back again. GP marked it in my records as being a 'significant illness' incase I ever need anything like chemotherapy at any time in the future... not sure why it would be relevant though.
Sorry to hear about your worries Charlie. Don't know much about CMV and pregnancy I'm afraid. Hope you're OK.
