Woke up in the middle of the night with very bad pain in my ear, not inside but on the outside of my ear. It felt like I'd been punched and was throbbing.

This morning I can barely smile or talk because moving my face hurts and my ear is double the size of the other, very red and very hot.

I have not worn earrings for many years so don't think it could be from the piercings.

I'm in so much pain! Waiting to hear from the doctor.

Normal ear on the right in the picture and horrible one on the left!

It was absolutely fine yesterday.

Is it spreading or has it come up overnight?

You need to get that seen today. It's not right and it's on your face - faces are taken quite seriously by the NHS because if that swelling spreads down in to your neck it could compromise your breathing.

It's come up overnight, I went to bed with a perfectly normal set of ears and then woke up in pain about 3am to this.

That’s a nasty infection and needs to be seen today. If the GP can’t see you you will need to go to A&E.

Could possibly be cellulitis - my DH is prone to getting it, and had it on his face once. Very swollen and sore. Needs heavy duty anti biotics. Hopefully you can get a consult with your GP, but if not try and find a walk-in, or ring 111. Needs to be seen urgently.

Gosh just looked at pictures of cellulitis in the outer ear and it does look very similar!

Okay will 100% push to be seen. Thank you.

Seen the doctor. It is cellulitis. On very strong ABs and painkillers with instructions to go to a&e if it gets worse.

Glad you managed to see your GP. As I said DH has had it several times, and caught it early each time, so the ABs have done the job. Keep an eye on it and hope you're on the mend soon.

That's good to hear.
