Diarrhoea in 2.5 yr old. Has had it for almost 3 days, no temperature, what do I do?

Never had it for this long before.
TMI to follow....
It is like newborn baby poop and smells the same.
It is also quite explosive.

He seems happy enough and is drinking some squash and wants to eat, though I am trying to starve him.
He was sick on the first night too but has not been sick again.

Any ideas?

NHS Direct website seems only interested in diarrhoea in tiny babies and adults.

DS gets this if he has a cold (the mucus literaaly works through his system) or is fighting some other bug...I think as long as he is still peeing and not obviously dehydrated then I wouldn't be too worried.

You could always phone NHS drect for advice if you have time?

Had this a few weeks ago with DD1 (3.5). She was fine most of the time until she went to the loo - lasted 6 days and I took her to the doctor at 4 days and had to give a stool sample (really funny having to explain that to a 3.5yo )

I 'phoned NHS direct and they told me

keep up fluids as much as poss.
DO not starve - they have discovered this does not help, if they want to eat let them but avoid milk. Rice, white, unbuttered toast and bananas are good for this sort of thing

If it continues you should take him to the doctor though.

Thanks for all that.
I won't bother with the starving then as it is not too successful anyway!
He is fine and dandy otherwise so will give it till monday then if no better take him to docs, unless of course he gets worse.
Thanks again.

no probs...hope he is better soon

We don't do stool samples unless the diarrhoea has persisted for 5 days, or if there is blood, or the child or adult is very unwell, especially with a fever.

Just give it a few more days as you said, let him eat and drink whatever he wants (it makes little difference anyway!) and ride it out

Well, things are firming up a bit today. Gross, I know.
Twas very watery but is now holding a 'Mr Whippy' shape.
Sorry, sorry, sorry.....

Think he is getting better!
