Anyone know anything about scabies <eeeek>??

I have what I, and the doctor I saw yesterday, suspect is scabies - very very itchy blotchy lumpy rash all over me, symptoms appeared three weeks after going to a party at a friends house and using a sleeping bag belonging to persons unknown.

Have been given Derbac and done myself and dd (no rash but best to be safe) yesterday, leaving it on for 24 hours. I know the itching can go on for a while after treatment but it is spreading, and is now on my face (not too badly though) and I have very swollen red eyes. I am taking Piriton three times a day but it doesn't seem to e doing much to help.

Saw a different doctor this morning who said that scabies never affects the face and gave me antibiotic eyedrops - but as I understand it, the rash is an allergic reaction and is not confined to the places where the mites are actually presesnt? I react very badly to flea/mozzie bites so it makes sense to me that it would be the same for scabies.

Any advice on stopping unbearable awful itch, and on whether the eyes are related to the scabies?

I've had it once but don't remember any bumps on my face. Had them all over my legs and arms though and my GAWD it was itchy. Like burst into tears, chinese water torture type itchy.

Can you ask for a stronger antihistamine in the mean time?

Without wishing to alarm you, I would also go straight to the emergency doc/hosp if you notice ANY swelling developing near/around your mouth/throat just in case your allergic reaction is getting more severe because it sounds quite bad you poor thing.

foxinsocks · 28/12/2007 20:30

also, did you Dermac carefully between fingers and toes as I seem to remember that's where they like to be?

stripeymama · 28/12/2007 20:34

I derbac-ed bloody everywhere believe me!! Redid my hands every time I washed them and did under finger/toe nails with an old toothbrush.

No swelling round mouth or throat, just eyes.

How long did it take for itch to go after treatment? And did you need to treat twice - have seen two doctors, one said only once, the other said twice

I did it twice. Didn't want the buggers surviving.

I seem to remember I was prescribed a sedating antihistamine for night time (because the itch was so bad) so I would call the doc and get them to prescribe you something stronger because your outbreak sounds horrid.

You know about washing the bedlinen etc.?

(and yes, I was told the rash could appear anywhere as it was a reaction to the bites rather than the bites itself iyswim)

My eye is now so swollen I can hardly open it and when I do my vision is very blurred - waiting for the on-call doctor to phone back.

I am so miserable I could cry In fact I have but it made my eye evn worse.

you will need to wash all beding towels soft toys at 70c at least 60c
hoping its just a reation to bites

stripeymama · 29/12/2007 11:27

Yes have washed everything - even dd's special blanky and hot water bottle covers. And had it tumble dried too.

The fecking doctor I saw yesterday insisted it could not be an allergic reaction - I'm soooo cross as I'm sure it is, and its just getting worse and worse despite being on Piriton and cold compresses.

Could it be a reaction to the derbac?

stripeymama · 29/12/2007 12:00

I don't think so as it had started swelling up before I did the treatment. Also there is a little bit of a rash on my eyelids that is quite itchy.
