Breathlessness, what is wrong with me?

ScoobyDoo · 28/12/2007 16:09

Over the past week i have had a very tight chest, i have been feeling totally exhausted & over the last couple of days i am finding it hard to catch my breath, even doing the smallest of things like sorting dinner, putting washing on is leaving me breathless.

Dp has also said i am heavy breathing when sleeping.

Is there something wrong with me?

Yes you can get asthma late in life. I was 32 when I got it.

Myrrhcy · 28/12/2007 17:17

Could be a chest/lung infection possibly then. And yes, I didn't develop asthma until my early 20s (but different symptoms to you).

Hope you feel better soon.

pinkteddy · 28/12/2007 17:24

Your GP should have out of hours service just ring the usual number it should re-direct you. The out of hours service will usually give you an appointment - might entail you having to go somewhere other than the usual GP practice (could be hospital site or a health centre). Or have you a primary care walk in centre locally? (check your local PCT website.) Better than A&E if not emergency. HTH.

GrinningSoul · 28/12/2007 17:29

sounds like me when i had a chest infection. doc said i had pneumonia and gave me ABs. i felt sick, couldn't breath in or move much, and had to sleep all the time. It doesn't have to follow an illness, but often does. i think mine was prompted by me inhaling some carpet cleaner.

GrinningSoul · 28/12/2007 17:30

by accident, obviously.

Magrat · 28/12/2007 17:30

chest infection or anaemia

either way you need a gp visit

WanderingHolly · 28/12/2007 17:35

Please don't wait until Monday.

You wait till Monday with a twisted ankle or an ingrown toenail. You don't wait till Monday with breathlessness and chest pains.

Find out where you can see a dr over the weekend from your gp's out of hours service. Get it sorted asap, the symptoms you are describing could be something more serious than a chest infection and in any case the sooner you start treatment, the sooner it's over, plus it won't get any worse.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 28/12/2007 19:50

Scooby - I would go to A&E. I'd tell you to call NHS direct but they'll probably just tell you to go to A&E. You can have pneumonia without being previously unwell with a cold/flu. Also a PE presents like that.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 28/12/2007 19:52

I developed asthma around 20 from living with my gran who smoked like a chimney.

SpacecadetLovesChristmas · 28/12/2007 19:58

go to a&e, this time 2 years ago, I had pnuemonia which stemmed from a chest infection that went untreated..you may well have a simple virus or any number of more serious things..do not leave it to chance..i was told i had pnuemonia then sent home from the gps with an ti biotics..however i proceeded to get worse and was actually posting on MN about how ill i was..mners told me to get to hospital asap and wehn I arrived I was 24 hours from death...not wanting to scare you but DO go and get checked out..especially as its gone on for a while

pirategirl · 29/12/2007 11:00

my goodness space cadet, thats very scary. how long were youin hosp for then??

and op, how are you?

SpacecadetLovesChristmas · 29/12/2007 12:13

any news??

pirategirl..they still discharged me after an overnight stay on a drip, but I was sent home with the assumption that I would be resting in bed and would recover(I had some seriously powerful ab's too)..however that didnt happen..another story that is

ScoobyDoo · 29/12/2007 14:24

Well still here & still alive

Breathing feels a bit better today not done any gasping but then not really done alot today.

I was going to go to our local community hospital last night then dp got called out from work, there was no way i was taking the kids with me especially dd.

I have however woken up very delicate, have a slight cough & cold now so probably is chest infection, have been drinking lemsip & resting loads, i am going to go to the docotrs monday morning if they are opn if not it won't be till wednesday, only other symptoms i have is my ribs or just below feels like it's acheing, feels a bit brused & am still feeling tired just run down though i think.

If i do get as bad as i was yesterday i will be taking myself to the community hospital if it's open.

Thanks for all the advice.

Yes, I think you should see your Dr on Monday regardless.

Hope you get better soon

(if the breathlessness gets worse then you must seek medical advice asap).

ScoobyDoo · 29/12/2007 17:12

I will do Mercy i was very worried last night about the breathlessness, have been a bit better today with it though so feel ok about it at the moment but if it gets bad again i am straight to A&E because not being able to breath properly is rather scary to say the least.

How are you feeling today?

emandjules · 30/12/2007 13:47

i personally would not sit on these symptoms, and would seek medical advice asap.

WanderingHolly · 30/12/2007 13:52

THe pain in your ribs could be an achey diaphragm but it could also be your liver.

If one of your dcs or your dh were showing these symptoms, what would you do?

Sidge · 30/12/2007 14:08

I think you need to see a GP.

(A&E not appropriate for something you have had over a week, but obviously if things change and you are very short of breath and can't speak then A&E is the place to go).

Could be a chest infection, bronchitis or pneumonia.

Hope you feel better soon.

cheeseontoast · 30/12/2007 14:21

Sounds exactly the same symptoms as I've had twice before - once pneumonia, once a pulmonary embolism.

Get yourself to A&E.

pinkteddy · 31/12/2007 14:42

did you get to docs today scooby?

ScoobyDoo · 31/12/2007 18:18

Hi yes went to the doctors this morning i do have a chest infection & am now on amoxcillin (sp?) for 7 days, my cold & cough are now here, my ribs ache & he listened to my lungs & said they are crackly.

He said i should start to feel better after couple of days on my antibiotics.

I do hope so because i am feeling very ruff indeed.

Thanks for all the great advice & like i said if i had felt i was getting worse & worse or it was more serious i would have taken myself to A&E, i did need to see a doctor though.

thanks everyone
