Blood tests results, freaking out.

Hi ladies, a bit of a weird question but if anymore could explain this to me I would be grateful (I have an appointment with my doctor but not until next week, trying to put my mind at rest in the meantime.)

I had a blood test yesterday, and the results indicated that my mean platelet volume is too high (11,1) and the upper limit is 10.9. On my results this is written in bold indicating that it’s not normal. However on a blood test I had in may 2021, my mean platelet volume was higher (12,1) but it wasn’t written in bold and the upper limit was indicated as 12,2.

My question is, my mean platelet count has gone down, but the threshold for normality has changed. Any idea why? Has this happened to anyone ? All other aspects of my blood panel came back as normal.

I’ve had tests done with results outside of the “normal” range. This is just a guide. A few things to consider:

  1. Tests done in different labs might have different ranges regarded as normal/not normal.
  2. Not everyone is typical. Sometimes, healthy people get results outside the reference range, while people with health problems can have results in the normal range. If your results fall outside the reference range. This should be looked at in context with an symptoms experienced.
  3. Results of this test and others can change due to various factors such as exercise done beforehand, dehydration, time of day etc, hence just a guide. The trend of tests done over time can be a better guide ie in going down or up.
  4. Each result needs to be read in conjunction with others to get a fuller picture.

Ok thank you. So I shouldn’t worry just yet.

I'll be honest, nobody cares that much about platelets.

If you speak to your GP, it will probably be the first time they realised platelets had a volume!

They’ve done something similar with platelets number, the figure has come down so my ‘normal’ is now outside range.

Chances are you don’t need to worry at all.
