Anyone had 'adult' chicken pox?

I need some sympathy and some idea of how long this will last!!! Not sure I can cope for much longer. I've soldiered on since Friday, catering for relatives and looking after my toddlers. I feel like CRAP - spots everywhere - itching like crazy, painful scalp, throat & head. Glands swollen. At least the flu symptoms have eased a bit now.

It can be very nasty, it might be worth while you contacting your GP and getting antiviral medication. This might limit the lenth and severity of the illness.

You have my sympathies!!! DP is still recovering from chicken pox as we speak, and my 3 week old has just come out in a few spots too. I had it when i was 25 and it was AWFUL!! Hope you get better soon!!

Hi, watch out for signs of high temp that won't come down. DH had temp of 41.2oc that would not come down, was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. Very rare!!!

MrsGrinch · 26/12/2007 16:19

Oh sympathy. I had it as an adult - plus I was 26 weeks pg at the time. Pretty grim.

With luck should be on the way out now, if fluey feeling has eased. But do take care - there are some (thankfully rare) but VERY nasty complications with adult chickenpox.

I had cp when I was 26 and it was the most awful thing ever. Felt unwell for a couple of weeks before spots and could not quite put my finger on why and then realised when the spots appeared but carried on going down hill. Temperature was sky high. Would not wish this on anyone.

Sympathy to you. I had it when I was 23 and was convinced I was dying! I looked like I had the plague, there wasn't a single bit of me that wasn't covered in spots. THe doctor prescribed me Gaviscon for my throat because it hurt so much from all the spots.

You'll feel so much better by the end of the week though.

I had it when I was about 25 and I felt extremely ill with it, quite out of it with fever for a couple of days, bed-ridden in fact - I coped with flu better than I did with CP! I had spots everywhere, hundreds, icluding inside the labia . I was so ill, very unusual for me, that my DH called the doctor, who refused to come out, saying there was nothing to be done for adult CP except time and itching medications, but I've read since it cane be very serious in adults.

Hopefully though, you'll be on the mend now, first couple of days are def the worst. You have huge sympathy from me, I can tell you - horrible illness for adults. Both my DDs had it and got just as many spots as I had, but didn't seem nearly as ill.

I am 31 year old female and I have the CP....for the 2nd time. My 7 year old nephew just got over it and guess where I got it from. My mom said "oh yeah you had it when you were little"....what that really means is i only had like 5 or 6 spots...very mild case....so I stayed around my nephew thinking that I couldn't get it....well guess what....I'm FREAKING MISERABLE!!! Doctor said i could be out of work for 2 to 4 weeks....I cant stay home for that long. And to top it all off...I'm a diabetic, so I don't know how that will affect me....HELP!!!

annoyingdevil · 28/12/2007 17:44

Thanks for all the replies. Coribug, mine has lasted exactly 7 days. I feel absolutley fine today - still spotty, but they aren't itching anymore and are looking less red. I'd seek medical advice though - as you're diabetic

Forgot to mention - get yourself some Eurax Lotion. It's 1,000 times better than Calamine lotion and really does soothe the itching. Confirmed by DP who used it the other week!
