My daughter had her ear lobes pierced twice each side last June. After 8 weeks she put small silver hoops in each piercing . After a while she developed a red lump behind one of the piercings all the others are ok ,no problems at all . The lump is now quite large we have tried lots of different things to get rid of it but it will not go away . We asked the place that did the piercing ,they said to put hydrogen peroxide on it ? I know lots of people say not to use this but she was desperate so used it. After only a couple of days of this it just seemed to cause irritation so she stopped . Can anyone please give me some advice as what to do next ? She is so upset about this . Are there any piercing experts out there who can help ?

How old is your DD? Might be an an infection or keloid scarring. I'd personally take it out and let it heal- esp if she already has another hole in the same ear! Assuming she isn't systemically unwell with fevers etc I'd just take it out, but if feverish, painful, pus, I'd remove and see GP.

Where did she get it pierced? Are the hoops real silver?

karmaz · 14/01/2022 01:07

Thanks for the replies she is 17. She is well in herself. The hoops are real silver. As regards taking the hoop out, so many places tell you to not to take the earring out? I am so confused with all the conflicting information out there. I wasn't happy with what the original piercing place told us to do either. Don't know what to do next

They were done with a needle at a proper piercing studio not Claire or anything similar.

Supposedly needle piercings are better. DS had his done a couple of weeks ago and also told not to change the earrings for 12 weeks minimum.
Has she tried cleaning it with Salt water?
Or it could be keloid scarring like PP said.

Yes tried salt water sprays and soaking, along with various other things over the time. If it is a keloid what can be done about it? She is super sensitive about it all.

I had this with my second piercing I removed the one closest to it (it had been pierced years ago) to allow the area to breathe and avoid irritation or transfer of germs. Then I made up a cup of saline solution which I’d heat up and the pour into an eggcup then (making sure it’s not too hot, just on the cusp) I’d dip my lobe in it for 5 mins x3 a day. Within a week it was much better. Once I was sure all was ok I put my other earring back in.

Hi there
Just wondered how your daughters ears are now? And what resolved it. As in the same boat.
thanks

I had this after using hoops when I got my ears pierced in the 80s. I swapped them for the gold studs that piercing places put in as standard back then. The lump went away. Maybe coincidental but might be worth a try.

I mean that the lumps went away when I restarted using the gold studs.
