Gasping for breathe,scary experience

Last night I woke up early hours with what felt like an air lock, gasping for breathe. It was really scary and DH was ready to call
An ambulance. After a couple of minutes (felt like ages) I caught my breathe and felt okay. Been okay all day today.
Any ideas what this could be or what caused it, slightly worried about going to sleep tonight
