Toothache- How long before antibiotics make a difference?

I have an infection under my tooth, where I had a deep filling about six months ago. Dentist prescribed me metronidazole yesterday - I have had five doses. I am still in absolute agony despite alternating co-codamol and ibuprofen. Tooth is coming out a week on Tuesday - how long will it take for the sodding antibiotics to kick in?

I am sorry to tell you that I have been in your position…. Took 2 courses of antibiotics. Then tooth out and infection reoccurred and I have dry socket for good measure! You have my sympathy 💐 the pain is worse than labour!

Mine didn't I'm afraid. 5 days worth and I had to get an emergency appointment to have it drained.
It's really shit OP, my sympathies. I'd give birth again over a dental abscess.

Oh fuck.

I have had the same in the past but I think you block it out. I have resorted to Orajel which is blocking some of the pain.

My pain completely disappeared on day 5: it was like flicking a switch. 🤞 for you.

I hate to add to the doom but I had exactly the same thing recently and was prescribed metronidazole as well and it didn't work, it was the 400mg dose as well. I had to go back to the dentist after the week was up, they prescribed a further course which also didn't work and I ended up having a root canal on day 12. I absolutely feel your pain and really hope and pray the antibiotics kick in soon 🤞 I only just managed the pain with taking ibuprofen and paracetamol but it was still so, so sore!
