High level of Platelets

Does anyone know what having a high level of platelets actually means? Had bloods done recently and apparently this has shown up but GP brushed over it (other things to be concerned with apparently) and I don’t really want to google too much.

It may well mean that you're eligible to be a platelet donor. That entails an hour or so on a machine, and many people can donate once a month (though you're not pressured abut frequency). Given the importance of donated platelets and the small number of people who can donate, it is well worth considering.

Oh, and you don't get the tired after effects of whole blood donation as you retain your red cells.

@EbonanzaScrooge if your platelets were over a certain number you would be referred, otherwise it’s considered high side of normal. I’ve had this result for a few years now.

@TheFoldOx I would gladly give my platelets if it could help others, can you advice the best way to donate?

@PurplePumpkinDream thanks for the reassurance. My GP mentioned it briefly but didn’t have much time to go over it again.

@EbonanzaSrooge I had my platelet count tested at a regular blood donation session and was notified a few days later that I was eligible to donate platelets. But there's full information on the NHS website at platelets.blood.co.uk/

I've always thought of it as very good thing. My DH has high level of platelets and cuts heal in hours! He is never ill and can donate. Also has unusual blood group.

@VioletLemon maybe I’ve got it wrong, my cuts/bruises take months to heal and I have a normal blood type. I’m never really unwell though
