Extremely sore throat

Had sore throat since 1st Jan, like glass could hardly swallow my own saliva.

Been on antibiotics 36 hours and I will say pain on swallowing has reduced but it's still bad enough to wake me up when pain killers wear off. (40 mins to go)

Would you go back to gp or percivere?

When ds was given antibiotics in hospital he was told if symptoms hadn’t improved in a couple of days to go back to his gp.

I’m not a hcp so can’t advise but maybe give the antibiotics a bit longer?

Also, I’ve always been prone to sore throats so realise how painful they can be, so sympathies!

Thanks, what's your best relief suggestion?

Have you tried difflam spray and gargling with hot salt water

Yep

I take Paramol at night time as the codeine makes me sleepy. The pharmacist told me it was their strongest otc painkiller.

Apart from that I alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol every 4 hours if it’s bad, so there’s no gap in pain relief. Paramol is paracetamol too so has to be counted as one of the maximum 4 daily doses.

Also, I used to always get Tyrozets but they’ve been discontinued as they contain antibiotics.

Some alternative suggestions on this thread:-

I'd give it another 24 hours but if it worsens get in contact with GP or 111 sooner. In particular have a read on quinsy symptoms

I think the difflam gargle is far better than the spray too - better relief

Is it a throat or tonsil infection? Feel for you, so so painful. Warm tea or water and honey. Last time I had tonsilitus I asked my gp pain relief and they said do you want the strong co-codamol or the really strong co-codamol so you could ask Flowers
