Beta Blockers

Hi I have been put on these due to a high heart rate which they are saying is tachycardia. I ended up at A&E a few nights ago as my heart rate had almost reached 180 bpm and I felt quite unwell. The beta blockers seem to be making me feel worse. They have seemed to lower my resting heart rate but i am feeling more dizzy and slightly more breathless. Is this normal at first? Thanks

Yes, it can take a few days to adjust to any new med that lowers BP. Can you check your blood pressure to make sure the beta blocker hasn't pushed it below normal?

Hi thanks for your reply. Yes i can check it at home its currently 112/73 which i think is ok. My pulse very up and down though today. Highest it has been is 93bpm usually it shoots up into the 140bpm

112/73 is fine, so that's not what is making you feel poorly. Give it a few days. Can you get in to see your GP about the rapid heart rate?

TSJ19 · 01/01/2022 16:24

I am under a cardiologist for my rapid heart rate which is why they have given me beta blockers to try. Unfortunately the other night it was very high and an ambulance came out to me and took me into hospital. They actually gave me diazepam to slow it down. All my blood tests showed no trauma to the heart no indication of a heart attack. My Ecg shows normal heart rhythm it is just my high heart rate. I also had a 24 hr monitor on back in July which showed all heart function to be fine but a high pulse rate.

@TSJ19 thanks for your reply hope you're feeling better now, I also have a high heart rate mines been like this for years I have to have a echo on Wednesday and was told I'll probably be prescribed meds for it after some tests.

I'm thinking it will be beta blockers I'm told I also have singular ectopics..how are you finding the beta blockers op?
I'd be afraid to take them as I have asthma and I read they can affect your breathing?
Pots hasn't been mentioned to me is that a cause for high heart rate?
TIA

TSJ19 · 18/12/2023 07:12

Hi I hope your Echo goes ok. The beta blocker does help with the fast heart rate but I can only take the smallest dose as they make me very tired and lower my blood pressure too much.
POTs can cause a fast heart rate but it also causes other symptoms as well. I get a lot of chest pain and quite a few of the other symptoms as well.
