Ds (5)has a UTI, might need further investigation - any info?

He was a bit off colour last week, and had a temperature Thursday and Friday, and was very lethargic. I thought he had a bug.
Friday night he woke up needing a wee in the night (unusual for him) and then started crying saying his willy hurts when he wees. He says it hurts when he is pushing out the last bit of wee.
He seems a lot better now - no temperature, but he says it still hurts when he wees. And even worse he has wet the bed two nights in a row, which is unheard of for him. Also his urine is stong smelling.
Took him to the doctor today, she prescribed antibiotics and is having his urine tested. The worring thing is she said if it comes back positive, it will need to be investigated further as it is unusual for children, especially boys to get UTIs, unless there is an underlying cause.
Does anyone know what this investigation will involve? What tests they do etc?
I am a bit worried as dd has had some health problems and we had to go through so many hospital appointments/procedures etc with her, and we have now been free of hospitals for a whole year. And I hate the thought of going through the endless cycle of all that sort of thing again with ds...

My nephew has recently been thru' this. I think he had a scan (possibly ultrasound) and then a 2nd scan a week later which was more complicated. A tracer was injected into blood stream and then another scan. I know they were at the hospital most of the day and the injections weren't great but all his tests came back clear. Apparently uti's aren't common so they run checks just to be sure nothing else is going on. He had a 3 month wait for hospital appt and was supposed to be on antibiotics during this time but the GP only gave a short course. HTH and that he's soon feeling better.

You have reminded me that the doctor did say something about a longer course of antibiotics (just noticed it is actually antibacterials he has - is that the same?) if the urine test comes up positive.
The scans don't sound too bad, only a bit unpleasant. It is the waiting for appointments and worrying about them I can't stand...

Phoned the GP - the results are back, and we now have an appointment for this afternoon. That means the result must have shown something

His specimen was positive. He is being referred for an ultrasound, and hopefully that will be all. It will be a long wait though....

Wallace - my dd had a renal ultrasound and another test too ( a micturating something or other) involving dye and x-rays. Both came back as nothing abnormal dectected although she did keep getting UTI's and in the end she was on low dose anti-b's for about a year.

Hope you get it sorted sooner rather than later.
