Extensor tendonitis (top of foot)

I have had a pain on the top of my foot for about 18 months now. Just had an x-ray to confirm it's not a (healed) stress fracture. I think the diagnosis is correct but it just doesn't seem to go away. I have tried bigger shoes, better shoes, rest etc. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Thanks!

I had something similar and good physio helped. Could you pay to see someone?

Sorry if this is something you’ve tried, have you tried shoes with laces?

Any problems with stumbling or picking foot up when walking?

Leftbutcameback · 03/01/2022 10:29

@ratussbaguss - I had thought about a chiropodist, but not a physio. Yes, could pay for that. Did the physio give you exercises to do? Thanks!

@Fishlipandtoeface I do wear laced boots and trainers (not many other shoes as WFH!). Were you thinking of more formal lace up shoes? Happy to try those. Walking is fine, except I also have stiff big toes so they tend to get a but sore after a couple of miles. I have insoles to help with that

Definitely see a physiotherapist op! Could be a simple muscle imbalance issue easily corrected with some exercises Smile

When you say stiff big toes, have they been looked at? Is there a reason they are stiff?

Leftbutcameback · 08/01/2022 20:45

@Fishlipandtoeface - yes, I was having toe pain quite a while ago. Saw a chiropodist who said it was hallax rigidus and gave me some insoles. I try to stretch them during yoga, and haven't had problems since.

Thanks @Physwizz - definitely my next step now!

How did you get on OP? I think I have this too, pain but no swelling on the top of my foot as if my shoe laces have been laced up too tightly (they haven't) no specific injury I can think of but I have been exercising more recently

Leftbutcameback · 31/01/2023 21:50

@Parkmama - I ended up going to see a fab lady at the local hospital who provided me with some insoles for the stiff big toe problem. They have pretty much solved the associated tendinitis, although still a bit of soreness if I do certain activities (like a lot of yoga). I bought myself another pair of insoles as they were standard ones. My GP referred me straight to see her rather than via the specialist first. She obviously sees hundreds of tricky feet and knew exactly what was going on.
