Small moveable lump above collarbone - lymph node?

Firstly, probably relevant to say I have a history of health anxiety, but anyway...

About 3 months ago I was absent mindedly rubbing the area at the base of my neck when I thought it felt a bit lumpy. Specifically, I found what feels like a small, moveable lymph node no bigger than a small pea just above my left collarbone There's possibly another one a bit higher up but that may just be lumpy muscle or something. Both disappear if I turn my head to the side. I wasn't too worried initially as I have something similar much higher up my neck on the same side that's been there at least 18 months, probably longer as I'm sure it's the same one I felt 4 years ago when worried about a lump on DS's neck. DH has one too so came to the conclusion it's normal to sometimes feel lymph nodes.

I've only just started worrying now as I was preoccupied with a different health worry, now resolved. I of course googled and read that nodes near the collarbone are more concerning and "more likely to be cancer" especially in the over 40s (I'm over 50!). Another site even said ALL palpable nodes near the collarbone should be considered suspicious - yikes!!

I can't stop touching it so it feels more prominent and the area is now red. If I do manage to leave it alone it seems to go down a bit and I usually have to poke round a bit to find it. DH claims to have a palpable node in the same place but I cannot feel it, although he can barely feel mine either!

Normally, I would ask the GP to check, although the thought of potentially being sent for tests and waiting for results terrifies me. However, we've been told not to book appointments for non-urgent matters and sending a photo/video is pointless as nothing to see! I'm thinking of trying not to touch it for a few weeks (easier said than done) and try to book an appointment if still there, if allowed by then.

I swing between thinking I'm being ridiculous and it's health anxiety talking and thinking it's a sign of something serious!

Any thought? Apologies for the rambling.

Thanks.

Get it checked out

TheStarMachine · 28/12/2021 17:31

I would get it checked out to set your mind at rest but I have something similar that I have had for at least 10 years. Its a lump about the size of a kidney bean right around my collar bone on one side that I can move around with my fingers.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 28/12/2021 17:33

As above. Get it checked out. Without wishing to sound a drama llama the same happened to me (a looong time ago now) and it was cancer. As you can tell I’m fine Grin and am 20 years in the clear, but I made things worse by not getting it checked as soon as I noticed it, and had a much harder treatment plan by the time I was eventually diagnosed. I’m sure yours is nothing ominous, but it’s always best to mention any lumps so you can rule it out.

GoodnightGrandma · 28/12/2021 17:35

If it’s soft and rugby ball shaped it’s probably a lymph node, but it needs checking now you’ve found it.

@TheStarMachine - did you ever get yours checked? Mine is not that big, small petit pois at most!

@SherlocksDeerstalker glad to hear all is well now.

Get it checked. My dad found one similar and without wishing to scare you, he has been diagnosed with non hodgkins. Probably nothing but better to be safe. Dr will class this as urgent.

sandycloud · 29/12/2021 13:19

I had exactly this a few months ago. Went to gp. Referred for scan. It was fat!! It's still there but not got any bigger.

TheStarMachine · 29/12/2021 13:21

@worriedoncemore - I never got mine checked because I have had it so long but maybe I should mention it if I ever have a face to face GP appointment again!

worriedoncemore · 29/12/2021 15:44

Thanks for the replies. Have called doctor. Won't let me book a face to face, has to be phone call next week. Oh well, step in right direction. Really hope it's nothing Hmm

How did you get on in the end?

worriedoncemore · 22/01/2022 08:25

I saw the GP. She had trouble finding it at first and she was doubtful it was a lymph node, didn't feel like one to her and tiny. It's on the muscle, not actually in the collarbone dip which would've
been more worrying. More likely a knot of tissue on the muscle or fat blob. Too small to ultrasound. Nevertheless, she sent me for blood tests which came back clear, although they couldn't process one of them so had to re do it so won't get result until next week which is stressing me, but fingers crossed x

That's really positive- I know you will be wanting the last blood results to come back clear but I bet you're relieved
