Fanjo question - is this the menopause? What else could it be? (Sorry if TMI but I really need advice.)

Last period I had arrived as normal and lasted only one day. Then went. A couple of weeks later, I started bleeding again, this time thick mucus - y, dark blood, and it went on for about 10 days. (But there wasn't very much of it, I only wore a panty liner which was perfectly adequate.) I think it's stopped today.

It occurred to me that maybe I'd left a tampon in, so I did feel thoroughly, but nothing, although my fanny felt very spongy and swollen. It's not a spontaneous abortion as I haven't had sex. I went to the doctor and he said as I'm 41, it's probably the beginning of the menopause and I should just go away and not worry about it.

It had occurred to me that it might be the first sympom of menopause, but my only problem is that if it isn't and it could be something else, shouldn't that be investigated? Or am I being hysterical and there really is nothing else this could be?

I'd really appreciate any advice.

Have you looked up other symptoms of perimenopause? Terrible forgetfulness is one of them, and being a tad pm myself I can't remember the rest - but I would google and see if you have any of the others. If not, I would insist on a referral to a gynie - or at least have your hormone levels tested etc. I have had weird periods on and off but not the sponginess etc - I wouldn't be fobbed off if you're not happy.

Hmm. I am horrifically forgetful. But I think I always have been.

I'm not worried if it's pre-menopause, that's fine, but I would like to know if there's anything else it could be, just to ensure that I can relax about it. If it's menopause, then I'll start reading that copy of Germanine Greer's "The Change" which has been sitting on my shelf for 10 years, but if it isn't, then obviously I'd like to know that it's not something serious I need to worry about.
