DS2, 7 months, no poo for 4/5 days, how serious?

Poor little DS2 hasn't had a decent poo for several days, think the last one was at the end of last week or the weekend, not 100% sure (DH did his last dirty nappy and can't remember exact time/details).
He keep straining but nothing comes out (or if it does its only tiny hard pellets), he now has a large, hard impacted poo stuck inside which he can't pass, poor thing. He cries and screams while straining, which he is doing every 2-3 hours.
Have tried all the things I can think of (tummy maggage, warm baths, prunes, water, fruit juice, lots of breast milk, as well as imfant suppositories and even lactulose tonight).
Have spent lots of today at my surgery trying to get him seen by a GP (and failing).
Is this a serious problem and when do we need to get him checked out if no poo is forthcoming? We are all very frazzled from his crying/screaming.
Any advice much appreciated.

Hi there
My DD2 is also 7 months and have been having the same problems. i took her to the doctor who wouldnt do anything. i have learned that if something eg fruit juice isnt working give it up as it gave my serious stomach pains which led to loads MORE screaming (already frazzled as you said). I am eating lots and lots of grapes which for my DD2 has done the trick through the breastmilk. It was recommended to me and since i have been doing it she has had regular soft poos - about 3 per day. Check how much fibre he is getting as if too much could be holding him up.....maybe even cut out solids for a day. he will be hungry but it might help things to stop stockpiling inside- at least he'll be getting nutrients through your breastmilk...

Thanks for that nowwearefour.
Have only tried fruit juice today so think the build up already there. Will try the grapes, good idea (he has been hainvg but seem not to to have helped him).
Also gave him no solids today after porridge for breakfast.
Bit worried about how long a large, hard poo can sit there without causing him some harm.
Have tried to google but hard to find any info

go to the doctor then. there is no harm whatsoever in going it is a very valid concern. i am sure it wont be harming him til he tries to get it out and if you give him liquid it will maybe soften inside enough to get out. try not to worry but do get expert advice.

Have you tried warm sugared water. I know not good for teeth but seems to help them go sometimes. Also as for massage, dont give up. I have same problem sometimes but if I persevere with massage she usually does something eventually (not always) It sometimes requires bit of kneeding, not sure if good idea though, with olive oil. If doesnt work I give her more warm water and go back and do it again later. I will definately try grapes idea.

PS. does this really affect their sleep as my Lo keeps waking up too?

Thanks pevie, I just posted on your thread too. Will try the sugared water (though this isn't so different from fruit juice I suppose).
Am going to go and eat some grapes now!
