I am not very good at this, so looking for some help before I start thinking the worst. DS 5 is a pretty healthy kid and does not get sick. He has had maybe 3 colds and 1 stomach bug. Today he came home from school saying he did not feel very well. he sat on the sofa and watched tv, ate a little bit for tea and has a temp of 38.8 with no other symptoms. I put him to bed at 7:00 with a dose of calpol and checked on him at 8:30 - he was sweating so much his hair was soaking wet and the so was the bed. I took the blankets of him and changed him and he went straight back to sleep. What can cause a temp without any other symptoms?

It is still most likely the first signs of a cold. He will probably develop more signs as time goes on. Keep him dosed up and call the doc if you cant get his temperature under control with regular dosing.

Hope he is well soon

High temp usually means infection (of some sort).

He might not be showing any symptoms yet.

DD1 had 24h of raised temp last week before complaining of sore throat, headache and "painful legs". Took her to the Dr, she had tonsilitis

If he's still poorly tpmorrow, maybe take him for a check-up?

It could also be a sign of a UTI, sometimes these go unnoticed, so keep an eye out. Hope he is Ok

PLEASE HELP MY 7YR OLD AS GOT A TEMPERATURE TOO, NO OTHER SYMTOMS YET. JUST HEARD ON THE GRAPEVINE THAT MUMPS IS GOING AROUND WHERE I LIVE. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MUMPS?? [SAD]

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 19/12/2007 13:46

How high is his temp, Kaz? Try him with some Calpol or similar, see if it comes down. Anything over 39 that doesn't respond to Calpol is worth a call to the Dr.
Has he had his MMR?

Magrat · 19/12/2007 13:47

any kind of virus could do that really

as long as temp is coming down with meds and he's taking fluids don't worry unduly .. just keep an eye on him

if temps don't come down seek medical advice IMHO

Mumps isn't a big deal at 7 although painful IIRC it doesn't last long and you can medicate through it..

Magrat · 19/12/2007 13:48

calpol stabilises temps, ibuprofen brings it down .. use both alternately

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 19/12/2007 13:48

How's Dh, Twigg? Hope you got more sleep...

Magrat · 19/12/2007 13:52
