What are these back/chest pains?

I’m fairly medically aware but my symptoms are flummoxing me!

Started on Wednesday when I woke up with bad back ache, pain between my shoulder blades. Thought I’d slept funny and had tweaked a muscle. However, pain didn’t go away, but proceeded to ‘move around’. So during the day, i either had pain in my upper back, or it had moved to my shoulder, then in my chest (centre slightly left), then by ribcage at the front. This continued all through Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. No pain at rest though, only when I moved. My thinking swung from ‘I’ve definitely pulled a muscle’ to ‘I have heartburn’ to ‘shit, should I go to A&E because its now hurting where my heart is’. I didn’t call 111 or OOH GP because by Saturday I’d had the pain for 4 days and I figured if it were serious I would have probably collapsed by that point (and I didn’t fancy a 6 hour wait in A&E for tests). So far all the pain had been either center or left side of chest/back.

On Sunday, I woke up and all the pain had gone. Brilliant. Same yesterday, not so much as a twinge. But today, the pain is back - but this time on the upper right of my chest - and I can only think that there is a lung in that particular position.

It’s not plueretic pain (ie no difference in levels of pain when breathing in), its just a dull ache.

I’m therefore thinking referred pain from somewhere else because it keeps ‘jumping’ position as to where the pain is located? Does anyone have any idea?

Getting a GP appt isn’t easy and I don’t want to waste their time and likewise A&E locally is rammed at the moment and it doesn’t feel serious enough for that as its been going on since last Wednesday.

Gallstones?

KittenCatcher · 16/11/2021 14:36

If you are medically aware then you know the only way to diagnose this is with blood tests, scans, xrays, ecg etc. It could be your heart, lung, an infection, muscular, ectopic pregnancy, shoulder ligaments. I would at least contact 111 if you are worried.

When I had pain in my back (it didn't move around to be fair) my gp sent me for bloods and an x-ray. No harm in trying to get a telephone appointment with your gp to see what they say.

Sounds like the pain I had after surgery where they filled my abdomen with gas.. the trapped gas travelled around me for days and days and was painful, but moved.. And was like you've described.

Have you tried simple solutions like wind tablets? As well as I think considering the GP or maybe 111?

Another vote for gallstones

Guiltypleasures001 · 16/11/2021 23:15

Yep I'm here for the gall stones

PatterPaws · 16/11/2021 23:19

Shingles maybe?

Thanks everyone. DH has had gallstones before and it definitely wasnt like he experienced.

Anyway…its all gone away now! Very strange. I did google and ‘chrondocostitis’ popped up which my symptoms seemed to fit in with. But it has completely resolved now so thankfully I didn’t need to bother the GP in the end!
