Genetic testing for Ataxia?

A friend has just had her father in law tell her he has “cerebellar atrophy” or ataxia. Diagnosed many years ago, (after 2000) but didn’t say anything so as not to worry anyone. Says it can’t be hereditary as no other family members have got it.
She has kids and is now terrified that they may inherit the condition.
It CAN apparently be hereditary and family members can carry the gene without having the condition.
Anyone know if there is a genetic test freely available - seems bit weird he didn’t have one done.
Thanks

There are many causes of ataxia and most are not hereditary. There is good information here:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/ataxia/

Ataxia UK has lots of info too, and a helpline - maybe they can help?

Ataxia.co.uk

Sorry should be Ataxia.org.uk
