Antibiotic makes me feel so sick

Hi all

I have to take antibiotics for a bad eye infection. Last time I took a course I was so nauseous it was awful. Any advice ? I haven’t tried probiotics but might try them. Also do people find taking it with food better or worse? Any advice much appreciated. I’ve been given 7 day course….
Thanks

Definitely take after food, ideally a meal. Probiotics may help and certainly won't do any harm. Things like ginger biscuits, polo mints help me relieve nausea. Sympathies, I've just started some anti biotics for a UTI and now have a horrendous headache...

Why are they so horrible?!? I know they’re life saving and amazing but they just knock me out

oh i know.... my current ones i think are giving me thrush so i can't work out if the pain I've got is infection or side effects 🙄

SickAndTiredAgain · 15/11/2021 14:11

I always ask for anti sickness medication with antibiotics because I also seem quite badly affected by them.

JKDcot · 15/11/2021 14:22

@SickAndTiredAgain that’s interesting thank you for sharing. What anti sickness meds can they give you? I had some during pregnancy I could take? I feel so rough

I had doxy, (rhymes with ....) I would rather have chemo again TBH they were vile.

RedCarsGoFaster · 15/11/2021 14:29

It depends on the antibiotic. Not all of them will affect you in the same way.

There are lots of anti sickness meds, some you can buy in the chemist as well.

Check the instructions on food etc before you change how you take them.

I ask for cyclizine as I also had that during pregnancy and it seemed to agree with me - I know some people don’t like cyclizine as it makes them feel a bit spaced out but I’ve always been fine with it.

I had a really bad eye infection and took drops.

Anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 15/11/2021 14:36

I had doxycycline for the first time this week. The first two I took, I had to sit there willing myself not to vom and then go for a lie down. They really didn't agree with me.

I've taken the rest with food and they have been ok.

N0tfinished · 15/11/2021 14:42

Amoxicillin always makes me sick as a dog, my kids are the same. I just ask for an alternative to it. There are tons of different types. A nurse told me once that I should tell HCPs that my boys are allergic to it. They get terrible diarrhea so there's no way it could be effective at all.

ChippyChipper · 15/11/2021 14:47

I thought this might be about doxyclycline. I was prescribed it for the first time last week for a chronic sinus infection. Had never heard of it before. Thought it was pretty hardcore from the infections it treats. Saw loads of horrendous reviews for it so was worried about taking it. Thankfully I read them after taking the first one!

I didn’t feel nauseous but I did have heartburn and a bit of a burning throat. I had a daily Kefir yoghurt and took double dose of probiotics in the morning that I’d coincidentally ordered for my DD, and made sure I took the pill about an hour after dinner with a litre of water/squash. No other side effects. Thankfully only had a 7 day course.

I space mine out more. I'm 8 stone so a standard dose is too much for me. I get quite sick and diarrhoea with them.
Luckily I only need them every few years.

Is that a thing? Because I weigh less than that and they always make me so sick - maybe that’s why.
FinallyFluid · 15/11/2021 16:07

Interesting, I too weigh eight stone and they wrecked me.

colouringindoors · 16/11/2021 14:18

Why do they make you feel generally totally shit? Sad

TheCreamCaker · 16/11/2021 14:36

I'm allergic to Penicillin, so I've sometimes been given Erythromycin antibiotics, which make me feel sick and have a horrible churning feeling in my stomach. The GP prescribes Omeprazole (I think that's the right spelling)

colouringindoors · 16/11/2021 14:59

Feeling seriously miserable today.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/11/2021 19:52

Dh has doxycycline permanently due to no spleen and he’s ok on it. Neither of us can handle erythromycin.

quirkychick · 16/11/2021 19:58

TheCreamCaker, I'm also allergic to penicillin and completely agree with you about erithromycin. One gp told me it strips the gut flora Shock. Last time I had it I took Bio-Kult probiotics and was fine.
