Shoulder blades ratcheting sound

Teenage son was complaining of shoulder pain in the right shoulder. First thought was muscular as he plays squash.

when he moves his shoulders, as if to roll them, the shoulder blades make a horrible ratcheting/grinding sound. Haven’t noticed this before, should he contact a GP, or is it part of a muscular issue that will go with rest?

Sorry this doesn't help much but I've had this since my teens. First left and then both shoulders make a horrid grinding noise. It's possible that it's not directly related to the pain but he's only noticed it now. I did have a diagnosis of Thoractic Outlet Syndrome sometime in my 20s but it's not a very well-defined condition.

In my case the issue is most likely muscular from poor posture and too much sitting in front of the computer. The only time the grinding went away was when I had an intense yoga course several days in a row.

It could be tight muscles pulling the bones out of place. Maybe make a physio appointment. Where I live you can self refer to physio.

If I'm right, sports massage and stretching will sort the problem out.
