Coughing up blood

I have had a pretty severe cough for around two weeks now. In the past two days it's steadily gotten worse, I'm becoming breathless, vomiting and as of tonight coughing up blood.
I actually saw a doctor this afternoon who checked my chest and said it was clear although she did give me anti biotics to try and tackle the breathlessness.
I've googled coughing up blood and it gives conflicting advice, do you think I should go back to the doctor?

I think you need to go to A&E for assessment. It could be due to a chest infection, but there are other causes such as a blood clot on the lung that need to be ruled out. You do not sound well.

Flecks of blood or actual blood (if that makes sense), if it was flecks I would put it down to a burst blood vessel from all the coughing. If it is actual blood I would call 111 for advice.

Straight to A&E if coughing up blood.

Yes straight to a&e

I had a completely rotten bug a few years ago and had “blood in my sputum” (sorry). I had broken blood vessels in my throat with coughing so much.

If it's flecks it's possibly capillaries bursting in your throat (gross but not life threatening - I get this with bad coughs). I also vomit when coughing and have to sleep upright.

If it's actual blood from your lungs then obviously that's a massive problem.

Hope you feel better soon.

I had this. Turned out I had huge flood clots on both lungs. If they had gotten bigger no oxygen could have got in.

Please go.

I’ve just replied to another thread with my own experience of coughing up blood! A couple of years ago I had pneumonia. By the time I was diagnosed the gp said my chest sounded nice and clear but sent me to the ambulatory care unit at the local hospital as she was worried it was a clot on the lung.
Scans and x rays at the hospital showed that I had double pneumonia which cleared up quickly with the right antibiotics.
Try not to worry but do get checked out as soon as possible. Hope you feel better soon.

It's pretty hard for some random on the internet to diagnose you and would hate for you to not bother getting checked out. It could be just straining during coughing but none of us really know enough to reassure you, so essentially you would need a chest x ray and some blood tests doing to rule out a pulmonary embolism. (Worst case scenario) There's no way of knowing until you get these tests ultimately. We don't know how much blood and we can't see you in person and we're not doctors. It's a bit of an impossible question to ask and i'm sure other mumsnetters would feel awful if you hadn't got it checked out on their say so so If you still feel like crap get a second opinion, that's all we can say
