Cold sore has turned to a massive blister

Hi all I've always suffered cold sores and tend to get them from plastic or if I'm unwell. I had a small one yesterday that overnight has turned into a massive painful blister on one side of my bottom lip inside. I can barked eat, swallow or talk. I've never had one like this. Do I need to see the doctor or will it go down on its own? I think my doctor is still doing over phone appointments but I'm just not sure what to do as I've never had one swell up like this. I also feel abit sick this morning. I thought it would settle overnight but it hasn't at all. My dc is waiting on a pcr test ao she can't leave the house. Any advice? Thanks.

You poor thing. I get them too but never on the inside of my mouth.
I get them in my nose, the last really bad one I had went inside, up the outside of my nose and my glands in my neck were swollen and painful.
I didn't see the GP though, I generally self-medicate unless it's direBlush.
Call your local pharmacy? They are usually quite helpful and they'll advise if you need to speak to the docs. And the docs are generally more accessible if you say the pharmacist advised you as such.
Hopefully it heals soon.

Thankyou. That must have been awful I've never had them anywhere other than my mouth, they are horrible things. Never have I had one this big. My glands are also painful this time. I really thought it would have gone down overnight but it's just as big. I've been using the normal cream but it's done absolutely nothing. That's a good idea maybe ring the pharmacy see what they suggest. It's feels really heavy and irritating.

Have you got Zovirax cream ?
You should have it in the cupboard for when you feel that first tingle.
I’ve heard of people using liquorice to prevent them, I assume it’s a lip balm.

lnsufficientFuns · 02/11/2021 07:37

If it’s really awful they could prescribe aclivir so might be worth contacting them ?

I am prone to them. If I feel The Tingle, I dab iodine onto my mouth and usually it completely stops it erupting, haven’t had one in ten years

You poor thing. Cold sores can be so painful and debilitating. Zovirax never worked for me but I’ve found Propolis (bee glue) eased them.

I suffer with cold sores. I use surgical spirits on a cotton bud to dry it out. Only during the blister, not when popped.

Miracle29 · 02/11/2021 07:59

Thankyou for the suggestions. This one unfortunately didn't give me a warning. Normally they tingle and I apply the cream but this one I woke up with, it was just a small cold sore to begin with. I applied my cream throughout the day then last night it just turned into a massive blister all on the inside of my mouth so the cream won't stay on. I've also been using cymex so maybe I need a stronger cream. I've also heard of the liquorice balm aswell I might have stock up on different creams and see what works. It's so painful.

Might be infected. I think you should talk to GP or pharmacist. DS gets cold sores and they do get infected sometimes and make him feel like shit

Joy69 · 02/11/2021 15:48

I use neat tea tree oil on mine. For some reason Xorvirax doesn't seem to work on me. Horrible things, never had one in my mouth, but had a huge one on my cheek once. Felt like everyone was talking to it Hmm

DrWankincense · 03/11/2021 18:52

Are you feeling any better @Miracle29?

Miracle29 · 03/11/2021 18:57

Much better today thankyou. As the blister was mostly in my mouth i did a few salt water rinses as suggested by the pharmacy and applied cream throughout the day and it went down alot. I'm now left with the lovely looking yellow scabs Blush and wrapped a scarf around it today when out shopping but I'm happy the swelling has gone down. I never want one like that again.
Some brilliant suggestions so I'm going to stock up on whatever I can ready for the next one.
Thankyou so much everyone for advice and suggestions.

Glad to hear that. Its so miserable.
Also taking notes as Zovirax doesn't help me an awful lot and lots of things I haven't heard before to try.
My mum used to make us put aftershave on them as kids to dry them out, it was agony!

Miracle29 · 03/11/2021 21:40

Yes my mum did the same! She still does it now because she suffers too.
