I had chicken pox a good few years ago and a week ago gave birth to a beautiful DD. However, DP has just discovered that he has chicken pox! I'm assuming that as i am immune and DD is breastfed, that she will be immune too. Is this right? I really dont want DD to catch it!

Help!

As far as I am aware, its unusual (though not totally unknown) for bf babies under a year old to get CP, though my ds got it at 11m3w - really spotty in his 1st Bday pictures!

Poor DP though - it can be pretty ghastly for adults. Lots of bicarb of soda in the bath!

Hope your gorgeous dd misses out (do ask the midwife or HV for advice if you are worried) and DP gets better soon,

And congratulations on your new baby!

Congratulations on your new baby - and very sorry that your DP has chicken pox.

I have to say though that despite my having had chicken pox, and breastfeeding DD, she got chicken pox when she was 6 weeks old (caught from DS who got it when she was 4 weeks old). She was completely fine (if spotty) and not really ill with it at all.

People suggested to me that she was very unlikely to get it, but in our case, that wasn't true.

A friend's DD got CP at 2 weeks also breastfed.

I hope your DD doesn't get it but she may well do.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/12/2007 06:59

From what I know, babies are immune when breastfed, after the first few weeks. (Maybe 6?).

So I'd keep your DH away from your DD.

Given you had CP quite recently, though, hopefully your immunity is stronger than that of the rest of us, who presumably all had it in chidhood.

I wouldn't say i had CP recently - i had it when i was 25 and i'm 39 now!!!

my dd & ds got cpox and they were breastfed - but ds who was really small had no probs & only two spots. My dd was one & she had loads of spots but no prob with temperatures or scratching.

PortAndLemonaid · 12/12/2007 08:33

You may want to see if you can call in some extra help. There is a good chance that your DP is going to be very ill with CP (as in unable to get out of bed or do anything for himself for a good week to ten days), as adults who get it often are, and you have a newborn baby to look after.

JingleBelgoHoHoHo · 12/12/2007 08:36

RGPArgy - definitely keep your dp away from your dd while he has chicken pox - it is possible for even bf newborn babies to catch it.

Hope youd dp gets well soon - it can be nasty for adults.

Yes i can remember when i had it. It was awful and i felt terrible. I remember thinking that i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!!!
