Backache linked to weak stomach muscles after they were separated in pregnancy?

I had very separated stomach muscles with both pregnancies and after DD2 was born I was told (by my lovely mw) to be very careful for a few months as my back muscles would be compensating for my weakened stomach muscles.

Now I have increasing backache which feels muscular so I went to my gp who didn't seem to think it was related, she didn't even appear to have heard of there being a link. I asked if I should see a physio for some advice/exercises but she told me to go and read a book called 'Treat Your Own Back'.

So, does anybody have any knowledge/experience of this sort of backache?

(Also, AIBU for being a bit less than impressed with my GP's advice?)

After nearly 4 years finally someone else has the same as me!! God I've done my nut trying to find some help as nobody told me about this condition and about six months after my second baby its was at the point where I couldnt lay or sit down. I had xrays and chiropractors physios etc but no one actually made any reference to this condition and nothing helped. However I did have a course of Bowen which has now got my back good enough for me to start working on my core muscles again (aparently its these which need to be strengthened) basic exercises like lying your tummy on the floor and raising your shoulders and chest off the floor, also sit ups and general good posture whilst sitting has started to really help. I was gutted when it started to happen as even changing nappies was near impossible but my gp kept saying their was nothing wrong with me but after 15 years of doing yoga I was concerned I could no longer put my own socks on!!

I'm glad someone recognises it! What's Bowen?

I did, too!

You need a good physio.

My condition was found by my midwife, too, thankfully.

Bowen is a treatment like a gentle massage but works with neuro, muscular and nervous system (I think) I had three sessions at £30 each and it really helped my back, and other stuff. I spent hundreds on other techniques but nothing lasted they've got websites so you could look it up to get the info and a local practitioner. My second child is now 20 months and the strain that it put on my back is finally starting to calm down now and I'm not so totally stiff! I'm sure that if I'd have found out about this earlier then I would have been able to avoid the huge amount of strain and damage done to my back
