Face Tingling and Vitamin D

Hi. For nearly 2 months now I've been getting tingling and burning sensations in my face. Comes and goes, but I get it every day. Sometimes mild, and sometimes quite a lot of discomfort. Saw the GP last week and had a blood test. I've now received a text saying my Vitamin D level is slightly low and I should start taking a supplement, at 1000IU. Fine, but I've taken Vit D supplements of this type for years! I did swap to a lower dose 2 weeks ago as I started using a different supplement to help with arthritis and, as it has some Vit D in it,I stopped the separate higher dose tablet because I've heard too much But D is bad for you. I will now obviously swap back! But the thing that is troubling me is that I had these symptoms when I was taking the higher dose anyway. How likely is it that something has been missed?

You can take up to 4000IU units (100ug) per day of vitamin D so were unlikely to have been taking too much before. Is that the only thing that was picked up?

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 25/10/2021 16:16

If the tingling hasn't done after a week or two go back to your GP and ask for some more tests. Any other symptoms?

Catsrcool69 · 25/10/2021 16:17

Thanks for your reply. As far as I know that's the only thing it picked up. Maybe I just don't absorb Vit D well! Good to know it's hard to overdose on. I'll take both supplements and hope the face discomfort goes away. If it doesn't, then maybe there's something else going on.

I take 4000iu of vit D a day during winter and 2000iu in summer.

Definitely follow it up. A number of things it could potentially be.

Catsrcool69 · 25/10/2021 19:31

I've got a follow up with the GP next week which is good. I feel like I'm making a bit of a fuss, but it would be good to know what's going on!

Oh wow I’ve had this for a few months! It’s all around my nose and cheekbones and feels so weird, just a feeling of pressure. Had bloods which showed “deranged” lymphocytes, but follow up was normal. Doctor has just dismissed me and said it might be peri-menopause but he has no idea… and claimed you can’t test for that so referred me to a couple of websites Hmm

Catsrcool69 · 25/10/2021 20:45

@traingal - Yes, mine goes along the cheekbones, and can spread down my cheeks and at its worst, around to behind my ears and to my forehead. It's very weird! To be fair my doctor has not dismissed it at all. I'm post menopausal and he hasn't linked it to that at all. He did say vitamin deficiency was a possible cause, both B12 and D, and ran blood tests covering all sorts of things such as liver and kidney function, thyroid and diabetes. Perhaps it's worth a second opinion if yours is not taking it seriously?

Well it's not normal for your face to tingle so don't feel bad and keep chasing it up.

When you say discomfort, what does the pain feel like ? Stinging? Burning ? Stabbing ?

Catsrcool69 · 25/10/2021 20:57

The feeling ranges from tingling and a tight, full feeling, to a stinging and burning sensations. Sometimes feels as it my face has a life of its own! I've also now developed an occasional numb patch on my left buttock of all places! Always the same place. Can't see how that relates to my face though!

The amount of vitamin D in multi vitamin type supplements is so low as to be not worth taking.

I take 2000 during the winter but you can take up to 4000. If you take a high dose you should take vitamin k. But for 1000 I wouldn’t bother.

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 26/10/2021 09:43

Hope you get some answers OP, do keep us up dated.

Catsrcool69 · 01/11/2021 20:14

Hi, thought I'd pop back to say that I spoke to the GP today. Apparently my Vit D is a bit low at 67, but I've no idea what that really means! Anyway, he said to take 3000iu a day for 3 to 4 months and then he will do another blood test. I've been reading up on But D deficiency and suspect it might explain the aches and pains I get, partic in my feet and legs, as well as the face stuff. We will see!

Thanks for the update.. I might start taking some and see how I get on! Good luck

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 01/11/2021 21:20

I can’t help with the tingling i’m afraid but when i was told to take a high level vit D, i was told “normal” was anywhere between 100-200, so your 67 is a bit low (for reference mine was 16 and i was just a bit low on energy - i hadn’t had the bloods done for anything like that).

Hi Catsrcool69

How are you getting on?

UndertheHawthornTree86 · 05/06/2023 21:42

Hi @Catsrcool69 I'm experiencing the same thing - did you get an answer in the end?

Balleybunny · 31/08/2023 22:05

Hi! Also experiencing this. Did you get any answers? Wondering if an MRI is warranted.
